The Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs of Mozambique has responsibilities such as administering the civil court system and overseeing the prison system. At one time, the ministry published jurisprudence from the main courts, but has since discontinued this practice. Rui Baltazar
Rui Baltazar dos Santos Alves (born 1933) is a Mozambican lawyer, politician, and university professor who was an active supporter of FRELIMO during the Mozambican War of Independence. Biography Baltazar was born in Lourenço Marques (today Maputo) to a Portuguese Mozambican family. During colonial rule, he used his position as an attorney to defend political prisoners of the Portuguese authorities, and upon independence was appointed the first Minister of Justice People's Republic of Mozambique. In 1975, he also helped draft the Constitution of the newly independent nation. In 1978, he was appointed Minister of Finance, a position he held until 1986. In April 1986, he became rector of Eduardo Mondlane University, where he taught human rights law. He was also a member of the Mozambique Parliament from 1975 to 1992 and was Mozambique's representative to the EEC-ACP assembly. He signed the Lomé Convention on behalf of Mozambique in 1986. Teodato Hunguana
Teodato Mondim da Silva Hunguana (born 1946) is a Mozambique, Mozambican lawyer and politician who was the chairman of the boards of ''Telecomunicações de Moçambique'' (Mozambique Telecom) and M-Cel. Life and career He was born in 1946, the son of Augusto da Silva Hunguana and Amélia Abudo Hunguana. He graduated with a Law Degree from the University of Lisbon (''Universidade Clássica de Lisboa'') in 1972, becoming one of the very few black Mozambican lawyers. He became National Director of Labour in 1975 following Mozambique's independence from Portuguese rule on 25 June 1975. He was then appointed Justice Minister, Minister of Justice in 1978 by President Samora Machel and held that post until being appointed as Deputy Minister of the Interior in 1983. José Ibraimo Abudo (born 16 September 1947) is a Mozambique, Mozambican politician who served for a time as Minister (government), Minister of Justice, a position created in 1994 with the Elections in Mozambique, first multi-party elections in Mozambican history. Esperança Machavela
Esperança Machavela is a Mozambique, Mozambican jurist and politician. Machavela was appointed as Minister of Justice by President of Mozambique, President Armando Guebuza on February 11, 2005, when Guebuza named his new government shortly after taking office. Prior to her appointment, she had worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and had served as an ambassador to Portugal. She was removed from office (along with foreign minister Alcinda Abreu and transport minister Antonio Munguambe) on March 10, 2008, and was succeeded by Maria Benvida Levy, a former judge of the Maputo City Court. Maria Benvinda Levy is a Mozambican politician and former judge. Career Benvinda Levy was appointed Minister of Justice by President Armando Guebuza on March 11, 2008, succeeding Esperança Machavela, a jurist and former ambassador to Portugal. Helena Kida
Helena Mateus Kida is a Mozambican judicial magistrate and politician who has been the Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs since January 2020. A member of FRELIMO, Kida previously served as the deputy minister of interior from 2017 to 2020. Early life and education Kida was born on 12 October 1971 in what is today the Metangula district in the Niassa Province. She attended the FRELIMO school in Maputo for her primary education before progressing on to the Francisco Manyanga Secondary School. Having finished school, Kida enrolled at the Eduardo Mondlane University Law School, from which she graduated in 1997. She earned a Master of Laws from the Federal University of Bahia in Brazil in 2004. Prior to entering the judiciary, Kida completed a course at the Centre for Legal and Judiciary Training.
