New Serbia (political Party)
New Serbia ( sr-cyrl, Нова Србија, Nova Srbija, NS) is a right-wing political party in Serbia. It was established in 1998 by a group of dissidents led by Velimir Ilić from the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). History New Serbia was part of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) bloc which defeated Slobodan Milošević in the 2000 presidential election. The party took part in the 2003 parliamentary election in coalition with the Serbian Renewal Movement. The coalition received 7.7% of the popular vote and 22 seats; 9 seats were allocated to New Serbia. New Serbia ran in the 2007 election in coalition with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and United Serbia (JS). The coalition received 16.55% of the popular vote and 47 seats in parliament, 10 of which went to New Serbia. Velimir "Velja" Ilić ( sr-cyr, Велимир "Веља" Илић, ; born 28 May 1951) is a Serbian politician. He is the founder and president of party New Serbia. He served as the Minister without portfolio in charge of Emergency Situations from 2014 to 2016, Minister of Construction and Urbanism from 2012 to 2014 and the Minister of Capital Investments from 2004 to 2008. Early years and education Following the graduation from the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Technology (Department of Construction Materials), he worked for various construction firms, and then became a private entrepreneur himself in 1986. In 2005, he obtained his master's degree from the University of Kragujevac. His qualification was granted by an academic supervisory board entirely composed of officials of his own New Serbia party. Dejan Kovačević ( sr-Cyrl, Дејан Ковачевић; 1937–2021) was an engineer and politician in Serbia. He was director of the bridge-building company ''Mostogradnja'', served in the National Assembly of Serbia from 1994 to 1997, and was a minister in the Government of Serbia from 1997 to 2001. Kovačević was a member of the Socialist Party of Serbia (''Socijalistička partija Srbije'', SPS). Early life and private career Kovačević was born in Banja Luka, in what was then the Vrbas Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
