Adam Joseph van Koeverden (born January 29, 1982) is a Canadian sprint kayaker, olympic gold medallist, and politician serving since 2025 as the Secretary of State for Sport in Prime Minister Mark Carney's Cabinet. A member of the Liberal Party, he has represented the electoral disitrct of Burlington North-Milton West and its predecessor district of Milton in the House of Commons since 2019. He is an Olympic gold medallist in the K-1 500m category (2004) and a two-time world champion in K-1 500 (2007) and K-1 1000 (2011), winning four Olympic and eight world championship medals. Disability in Canada affects approximately 8 million individuals aged 15 and older. According to the 2022 survey by Statistics Canada of those reporting a disability nearly 42% of seniors had four or more co-occurring disabilities, while 43% of youth and 36% of working-age adults had two or three types. The disability rate was higher for women (30%) compared to men (24%), consistent with past trends. In terms of severity of disabilities, about 59% of disabled persons were classified as having milder disabilities, while 41% had more severe disabilities. Despite significant gains for people with disabilities in recent decades, there is historical and modern discrimination issues. Judy LaMarsh
Julia Verlyn LaMarsh (December 20, 1924 – October 27, 1980) was a Canadian politician, lawyer, author and broadcaster. In 1963, she became the second woman to serve as a federal Cabinet minister. Under Prime Minister Lester Pearson's minority governments of the middle and late 1960s, she helped push through the legislation that created the Canada Pension Plan and Medicare. As Secretary of State, she was in charge of Canada's Centennial celebrations in 1967. After leaving politics in 1968, she wrote three books, and had her own radio show on CBC Radio. She was stricken with pancreatic cancer in 1979 and was given the Order of Canada at her hospital bed.
