The Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources ( is, Umhverfis- og auðlindaráðuneytið) is an Icelandic cabinet-level ministry founded 23 February 1990. It was originally called the Ministry for the Environment but was renamed to its current name on 1 September 2012. The Ministry oversees a wide range of matters as they relate to the environment, including nature conservation, wildlife protection, forest protection and revegitation efforts, environmental impact assessment and land use planning, pollution control and environmental health, fire prevention, meteorology, and mapping, including surveying and remote sensing. Siv Friðleifsdóttir (born 10 August 1962) (transliterated Siv Fridleifsdottir) is an Icelandic politician. Rarely used full name is Björg Siv Juhlin Friðleifsdóttir. She is half-Norwegian and she partly grew up in Norway, where she spent almost every summer next to the Oslofjord with her grandparents. The Independence Party ( is, Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) is a liberal-conservative political party in Iceland. It is currently the largest party in the Alþingi, with 17 seats. The chairman of the party is Bjarni Benediktsson and the vice chairman of the party is Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir. It was formed in 1929 through a merger of the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. This united the two parties advocating the dissolution of the Union of Denmark and Iceland; dissolution was achieved in 1944, during the German occupation of Denmark. Since its formation in 1929, the party has won the largest share of the vote in every election except the 2009 election, when it fell behind the Social Democratic Alliance.
