Mindanao Treeshrew
The Mindanao treeshrew (''Tupaia everetti''), also called the Philippine tree shrew, is a species of treeshrew endemic to the Mindanao region in the Philippines. It was formerly considered the only member of the genus ''Urogale'', but that genus was merged into '' Tupaia'' when the species was found to nest within the latter genus in a molecular phylogeny. The scientific name commemorates British colonial administrator and zoological collector Alfred Hart Everett. Range and habitat It is found, as its name suggests, in Mindanao, in the Philippines. Oldfield Thomas
Michael Rogers Oldfield Thomas (21 February 1858 – 16 June 1929) was a British zoologist. Career Thomas worked at the Natural History Museum, London, Natural History Museum on mammals, describing about 2,000 new species and subspecies for the first time. He was appointed to the museum secretary's office in 1876, transferring to the zoological department in 1878. In 1891, Thomas married Mary Kane, daughter of Sir Andrew Clark, 1st Baronet, Sir Andrew Clark, heiress to a small fortune, which gave him the finances to hire mammal collectors and present their specimens to the museum. He also did field work himself in Western Europe and South America. His wife shared his interest in natural history, and accompanied him on collecting trips. Alfred Hart Everett
Alfred Hart Everett (11 October 1848 – 18 June 1898) was a British civil servant and administrator in Borneo as well as being a naturalist and natural history collector. Career Everett was born on Norfolk Island to British parents: George, the doctor at the penal colony, from Wiltshire, and Anna-Maria, from Jersey. They left in 1851 to return to England via Tasmania, so he was educated in England. In 1869 he went to Sarawak in north-western Borneo in order to collect natural history specimens. After two years there he entered the service of the Kingdom of Sarawak, as a Resident in the Baram district, under the White Rajahs. In 1878 and 1879 he was engaged by the Royal Society and British Association to explore 'the Caves of Borneo' in search of the remains of ancient man. Tupaia (genus)
''Tupaia'' is a treeshrew genus in the family Tupaiidae that was first described by Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1821. Taxonomy Raffles provided the name of this genus, which derives from the Malay word meaning a squirrel or a small animal resembling one. Characteristics Raffles described the genus as having an elongated snout, eight to 10 incisors, well-developed limbs, five-toed naked feet, and the sole furnished with projecting pads and sharp claws, with a habit and tail of a squirrel.
