Milligan Street, Perth
Milligan Street is a street in Perth, Western Australia that runs from St Georges Terrace to north of Wellington Street. The northern section provides access to the Perth Arena carpark and Telethon Avenue; there are also dedicated Transperth bus roads connecting to the northern end, south of the Fremantle railway line. A small side-street of the same name branches off the east side of Milligan Street between Murray and Wellington Streets, and forms a second intersection with Wellington Street. History Milligan Street appears in maps of Perth from as early as 1838, running from what is now Spring Street to Murray. It was named after Dr William Lane Milligan, the original owner of the land on the southern end of Milligan Street, south of St Georges Terrace. In 1863 the section of Milligan Street south of St Georges Terrace was rezoned and transferred to Matthew Hale, the Anglican Bishop of Perth. St Georges Terrace
St Georges Terrace (colloquially known as "The Terrace") is the main street in the city of Perth, Western Australia. It runs parallel to the Swan River and forms the major arterial thoroughfare through the central business district. Its western end is marked by the Barracks Arch near Parliament House across the Mitchell Freeway; the eastern end joins Adelaide Terrace at the intersection with Victoria Avenue. Naming St Georges Terrace was named after St George's Cathedral. Originally, houses occupied by clergy of the cathedral and lay clerks of the cathedral choir constituted a substantial portion of the Terrace. Some of these houses such as The Deanery remain, however the majority of these were demolished in the 1960s. The apostrophe was removed from the name in the 1980s. Matthew Hale (bishop)
Mathew Blagden Hale (18 June 1811 – 3 April 1895), very frequently spelled "Matthew", was the first Anglican bishop of Perth and then the Anglican bishop of Brisbane. Hale is recognised for seeking to empower the South Australian Aboriginals through his work in the Poonindie mission, establishing the Anglican Diocese of Perth and Hale School. Early life Mathew Blagden Hale was born on 18 June 1811 at Alderley, Gloucestershire, the third son of Robert H. Blagden Hale (5 May 1780 – 20 December 1855) and Lady Theodosia Hale (née Bourke). His maternal grandfather was The Earl of Mayo, Lord Archbishop of Tuam. After completing his education at Wotton-under-Edge, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and obtained his B.A. in 1835 and M.A. in 1838. During his time at Cambridge he met Harold Browne and they became lifelong friends. Perth City Link
Perth City Link is an urban renewal and redevelopment project in Perth, Western Australia. The projectbounded by the Mitchell Freeway, Wellington Street, the Horseshoe Bridge and Roe Street is on land that was once the Perth/City railway yard and dedicated railway property west of Perth railway station. The land was used by the railways and reserved for their use, from the 1880s until the late 1990s. At the time of early proposals, much of the space was no longer required by the railway. The foundation project, involved sinking a small section of the Fremantle railway line, between the City and Northbridge and demolishing the old Wellington Street Bus Station. Roe Street is a street in Perth, Western Australia. The central section of the street forms the southern boundary of the suburb of Northbridge, while the eastern end borders the Perth Cultural Centre to the north and Perth railway station to the south. The southern approach of the Hamilton Interchange, which connects the Mitchell Freeway and the Graham Farmer Freeway, passes over the street to the west. Melbourne Street is a street in Northbridge, Western Australia that runs between Roe and James Streets. The current street is a part of an older and longer street that at one time extended from Murray Street to what is now Aberdeen Street. It is named after Lord Melbourne, the British prime minister in the 1830s, when the street was originally built. William Lane Milligan
William Lane Milligan (1795–1851) was a British military surgeon. He became an early resident of the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. Early life Milligan was born on 1 February 1795 in Cavan, Ireland. He received a Licentiate of Midwifery and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. Career He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and served as a military surgeon. He originally joined the 16th Regiment of the British Army, but he transferred to the 63rd Regiment on 8 February 1827. Some records claim that Milligan emigrated to Western Australia with his wife on James Stirling's expedition arriving aboard on 8 June 1829. Others claim that he emigrated to Western Australia with his wife, child and a nephew, arriving aboard on 30 January 1830. Hay Street is a major road through the Perth central business district, Western Australia and adjacent suburbs.
