"Midnight Special" ( Roud 6364) is a traditional folk song thought to have originated among prisoners in the American South. The song refers to the passenger train ''Midnight Special'' and its "ever-loving light." The song is historically performed in the country-blues style from the viewpoint of the prisoner and has been performed by many artists. History Lyrics appearing in the song were first recorded in print by Howard Odum in 1905: However, these lyrics are known to be floater lines, appearing in various African-American songs of that period, notably in the "Grade-Songs", which are about prison captains and have nothing to do with a train or a light. ''The Midnight Special and Other Southern Prison Songs'' is an album by Lead Belly and the Golden Gate Quartet, recorded for Victor Records in 1940 and released a few months later. In 1939, Lead Belly was back in jail for assault after stabbing a man in a fight in Manhattan. The ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, who had started to make field recordings of folk music for the Library of Congress, helped raise money for Lead Belly's legal expenses. It was Lomax's original intent to record songs in prison, but instead a recording studio was used. To create a "prison" feel Lomax suggested that the Golden Gate Quartet back Lead Belly. However, the Golden Gate Quartet was a polished, professional group, and Lead Belly had to teach them how to sing as a group of prisoners would sing the selected songs. ''The Midnight Special'' is a 1962 album by Jamaican-American singer, Harry Belafonte. The album notably contains the first officially-released recording by Bob Dylan, who plays harmonica on the title track. For many years the Belafonte session was thought to have been Dylan’s first professional recording, simply because this RCA Victor album was released first. However, in 2001, documentation was found in the RCA Victor vaults along with the session tapes which definitively dates the session as having been recorded at Webster Hall, New York City, in February 1962. This places it later than Dylan's recording session with folksinger Carolyn Hester, which dates from September 1961, also in New York City, although her album was not released until later in 1962.
