Mick Palmer (Australian Politician)
Michael James Palmer (born 27 January 1953) is an Australian politician and a children's book author. He moved to Darwin in 1960 and was a Country Liberal Party (CLP) member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 2001, representing Leanyer until 1987 and Karama thereafter. He served in various Cabinet positions while a MLA. He was defeated by Labor candidate Delia Lawrie at the 2001 election. He currently serves on the Darwin City Council as a member of the Lyons Ward, first elected in 2015. Early life and education Palmer was born on 27 January 1953. In 1960, his family relocated to Darwin where he attended Saint Mary's Catholic Primary School. From 1970 to 1983, Palmer worked for the Commonwealth and Northern Territory public service. 1997 Northern Territory General Election
A general election was held in the Northern Territory on Saturday August 30, 1997, and was won by the incumbent Country Liberal Party (CLP). Shane Stone continued as Chief Minister. During the previous term, the CLP had lost the seat of Fannie Bay to Labor in a by-election. The CLP did not win the seat back, but managed to take MacDonnell from Labor and Nelson after Independent Noel Padgham-Purich retired. Kon Vatskalis
Konstantine Vatskalis (born 4 April 1957) is a Greek-Australian politician and the current Lord Mayor of Darwin. Before becoming Lord Mayor in 2017 he was a Labor Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from September 2001 to October 2014, representing the Darwin-based electorate of Casuarina. He was Minister for Business and Economic Development, Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Defence Support, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Minister for Essential Services, Minister for Health, Minister for Mines and Energy, Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries and Minister for Children and Families. Lameroo Beach
Lameroo Beach is a small beach located off the esplanade in central Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was the location of the town's historic baths between 1922 and 1974. The name for Lameroo Beach comes from a corrupted interpretation of the nearby Aboriginal site Damoe-Ra, which means "eye" or "spring" in Larrakia. which was also a place of meaning to the larrakia tribe. The old larrakia people would canoe from Cox peninsula to Lameroo beach and back during time's of ceremonies and other important events Lameroo Baths Lameroo Baths were the second ocean baths built in Darwin. The first, built near Fort Hill in 1880, were damaged in a cyclone. The growing popularity of swimming at Lameroo Beach made it an obvious choice for the construction of new baths in central Darwin. Burke Ministry (Northern Territory)
The Burke Ministry was the ministry of the sixth Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Denis Burke. It was sworn in on 9 February 1999, following the resignation of former Chief Minister Shane Stone the previous day. While Stone told the media that his resignation was "pretty much" of his own timing and he wished to give the new CLP leader sufficient time to prepare for the 2001 election, it followed a meeting of backbenchers and some cabinet ministers advocating his removal.
