Mick Michael
Michael Agapitos Michael (22 September 19226 May 2016) was an Australian local government politician. He was Lord Mayor of the City of Perth in the 1980s. He died aged 93 on 6 May 2016. Early life He was born in Perth, Western Australia to Jack Michael and Ourania Zempilas, Greek immigrants. His father was a World War I veteran, having served in the Australian Army before becoming a fruit barrow owner and later a grocery shop. He attended Highgate Primary School and later Perth Boys' but left to work in the family business when he was fourteen. One of his brothers is Ken Michael, ex-Governor of Western Australia. In 1940, Michael enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force, serving until 1946. He was a member of 77 Squadron, and was posted to Darwin and saw the Japanese air-raids. The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. Chas Hopkins
Charles Hopkins is an Australian politician and businessman. He was the Lord Mayor of Perth from 1988 to 1991. Hopkins was elected to the City of Perth council in 1975 at the age of 26, making him the youngest Perth councillor ever elected. He served as Deputy Lord Mayor from 1980 to 1981. Hopkins was elected Lord Mayor in 1988, defeating two-term incumbent Mick Michael, and also becoming the youngest Lord Mayor. He ran for re-election in 1991, but was defeated by former Liberal Senator Reg Withers. Hopkins again ran for Lord Mayor in 2003, his first bid for council since his 1991 loss, but was defeated by incumbent mayor Peter Nattrass. He contested councillor positions for the City of Perth at both the 2009 and 2011 elections, but was unsuccessful on both occasions. Vincent Street is a street in Perth, Western Australia. It runs west-east, separating the suburbs of West Perth and Perth from North Perth. The street is believed to have been named by the chief draftsman in the Lands Department, George Vincent, after himself in about 1876. Vincent was the recipient of the land on the north side of the street, east of Charles Street, in the first Crown grant of Perth. The local government area City of Vincent was named after the street (on which the city council chambers are located). Charles Street is a major road in the inner northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. It runs from Newcastle Street and extends up to London Street, providing a connection between Mitchell Freeway and Wanneroo Road. It is the southern section of part of State Route 60, which continues north along Wanneroo Road. History The street was named after Captain Charles Fitzgerald, Governor of WA, 1848–55. West Perth is an inner list of Perth suburbs, suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia.
