Michigan Department Of Military And Veterans Affairs
The Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is a principal department of the State of Michigan. It oversees the military components and veterans services for the State. The military components are the Michigan National Guard and Michigan Volunteer Defense Force (MI VDF). History The Department of Military Affairs was formed as one of the initial principal departments under the Executive Organization Act of 1965 as required by the 1963 State Constitution. In 1997, the department was renamed the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs by Executive Order. In 2005 by Governor's Executive Order, the State Military Board was abolished with duties transfer to the department with the Governor's approval authority over the Military Board was transferred to the State Administrative Board. The Michigan Army National Guard is the Army component of the Michigan National Guard and a reserve component of the United States Army. During the Cold War, the 156th Signal Battalion was federalized on 1 October 1962 at its home stations in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. This marked the Michigan National Guard's last call to federal duty for service outside the state for almost 30 years. In February 2002, the 46th Engineer Group of the Michigan Army National Guard was reorganized and redesignated as the Engineer Brigade, 38th Infantry Division. The Michigan Air National Guard (MI ANG) is the aerial militia of the State of Michigan, United States of America. It is, along with the Michigan Army National Guard, an element of the Michigan National Guard of the larger United States National Guard Bureau.
