Michigan's 24th Senate District
Michigan's 24th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 24th district was created by the 1850 Michigan Constitution, as the 1835 constitution only permitted a maximum of eight senate districts. It has been represented by Republican Ruth Johnson since 2023, succeeding fellow Republican Tom Barrett. Geography District 24 encompasses parts of Genesee, Lapeer, Macomb and Oakland counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 24, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, surrounded Lansing, and covered all of Clinton, Eaton, and Shiawassee Counties and parts of eastern Ingham County. Communities in the district included Charlotte, Grand Ledge, Eaton Rapids, Potterville, Waverly, DeWitt, St. Johns, Corunna, Durand, Owosso, Williamston, Delta Township, Bath Township, DeWitt Township, and small parts of East Lansing and Lansing proper. Charlotte, Michigan
Charlotte ( ) is a city and county seat of Eaton County, Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 9,299. Charlotte is in the central portion of the county on the boundary between Eaton Township and Carmel Township but is politically independent of both. Interstate 69 serves the city and connects it to the state capital of Lansing. It is located from downtown Lansing. History In 1832, George William Barnes purchased the land that would become Charlotte from the U.S. government. Barnes in turn sold the land to Edmond B. DeWitt Charter Township is a charter township of Clinton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 15,073 at the 2020 census, which was an increase from 14,321 at the 2010 census. The original survey township now includes portions of the cities of DeWitt, East Lansing, and Lansing, but all are administered autonomously or through 425 Agreements. Bath Charter Township is a charter township of Clinton County in the state of Michigan in the U.S. As of the 2020 census, the township population was 13,292, an increase from 11,598 at the 2010 census. Williamston, Michigan
Williamston is a city in Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,819 at the 2020 census. Williamston is located east of the city of Lansing and borders Williamstown Township to the north and Wheatfield Township to the south. The Red Cedar River and M-43 run through the center of the city. History The location that was later to become Williamston started as the crossroad of the Grand River and Saginaw Indian Trails. It was first occupied by a small band of the Saginaw tribe of the Chippewa People which by the mid-19th century used the area as a 'summer village' (it was not used by them year-round, but they 'wintered' in the area that is now Meridian Township). Owosso, Michigan
Owosso () is the largest city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 14,714 at the 2020 census. It is located west of Flint, and northeast of Lansing. The city is mostly surrounded by Owosso Township on its west, but the two are administered autonomously. The city was named after Chief Wosso, an Ojibwe leader of the Shiawassee area. History 19th century Alfred L. and Benjamin O. Williams were early European-American settlers in the area. They were joined by Elias Comstock, who built the first permanent home in the settlement. Dr. John B. Barnes, a physician and a judge, and Sophronia King Barnes moved to Owosso in 1842.
