Michael Kerr (rugby Union)
Michael Kerr (born 23 April 1974) is a German international rugby union player, playing for the RG Heidelberg in the Rugby-Bundesliga and the Germany national rugby union team. He is originally from New Zealand and qualified to play for Germany after five years of residence in the country. He made his last game for Germany against a Welsh Districts XV on 24 February 2007. He has also played for the Germany national rugby league team in 2007, being threatened with a ban by the German rugby union coach if he did so. Kerr, the nephew of the late Bruce Kerr, a legendary player and coach of SC Neuenheim also played for this club, but missed the 2008-09 season because of a back injury. Flanker (rugby Union)
Flanker is a position in the sport of rugby union. Each team of 15 players includes two flankers, who play in the forwards, and are generally classified as either blindside or openside flankers, numbers 6 and 7 respectively. The name comes from their position in a scrum in which they 'flank' each set of forwards. They compete for the ball – most commonly in rucks and mauls. Flankers also assist in pushing in a scrum, but are expected to detach from the scrum as soon as the ball is out to get to the play before the opposition's forwards. Flankers also participate in line-outs, either being lifted to contest or win possession, or to lift other players. Flankers are usually the key participants in the tackling process. Michael Heidelberger (April 29, 1888 – June 25, 1991) was an American immunologist, often regarded as the father of modern immunology. He and Oswald Avery showed that the polysaccharides of pneumococcus are antigens, enabling him to show that antibodies are proteins. A dual-code rugby international is a rugby footballer who has played at the senior international level in both codes of rugby, 13-a-side rugby league and 15-a-side rugby union. Rugby league started as a breakaway version of rugby in Northern England in 1895 and in New Zealand and Australia in 1908, and consequently a number of early top-class rugby league players had been star players in the rugby union code.
