Metlife Foundation Award For Medical Research In Alzheimer's Disease
The Metlife Foundation Award for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease were awarded annually from 1986 to 2016 to recognize scientific contributions toward a better understanding of the underlying causes, prevention, and treatments of Alzheimer's disease. The awards were endowed by the Metlife Foundation and administered by The American Federation for Aging Research. Each of the winners received a personal award of US$50,000 and US$200,000 in research funds to further their research. Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease and the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events. As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioral issues. As a person's condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society. Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although the speed of progression can vary, the average life expectancy following diagnosis is three to twelve years. The causes of Alzheimer's disease remain poorly understood. There are many environmental and genetic risk factors associated with its development. The strongest genetic risk factor is from an allele of apolipoprotein E. Alison Goate
Alison Mary Goate is the Jean C. and James W. Crystal Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Director of the Loeb Center for Alzheimer's Disease at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She was previously professor of genetics in psychiatry, professor of genetics, and professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine. Michel Goedert FRS, FMedSci is a Luxembourgish-British neuroscientist and former Head of Neurobiology, at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Goedert was born and raised in Luxembourg. Paul Greengard (December 11, 1925 – April 13, 2019) was an American neuroscientist best known for his work on the molecular and cellular function of neurons.
