Charles Francis Meserve
Charles Francis Meserve (1850–1936) was an American educator, university president, academic administrator, and author. He served as president of Shaw University from 1894 to 1919, a historically Black university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Early life and education Charles Francis Meserve was born on July 15, 1850, in Abington, Massachusetts. His parents were Susan Smith Blanchard and Charles Meserve, a shoemaker and farmer. His family was descendants of Clement Meserve, a native from the Isle of Jersey (now Jersey) who emigrated to the United States in 1673. Meserve attended Waterville Classical Institute (later known as Coburn Classical Institute) for three years. In 1873, he enrolled in Colby College; where he graduated with an A.B. degree in 1877; an A.M. degree in 1880; and a LL.D. degree in 1899. Daniel Meserve Durell (July 20, 1769 – April 29, 1841) was an American attorney and Democratic-Republican politician in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in the early 1800s. Early life and career Durell was born in Lee in the Province of New Hampshire, the son of Nicholas and Abigail Durell. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1794. Nathaniel Meserve
Colonel Nathaniel Meserve (1704–1758) was an American shipbuilder and military officer. Background Meserve was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Clement Maserve and his wife Elizabeth Jones. On December 16, 1725, aged 21, he married Jane Libby and together they had ten children. Nathaniel Meserve would become a shipwright in his native Portsmouth, a hub of early American shipbuilding. During King George's War Nathaniel was a lieutenant colonel in the New Hampshire Militia regiment at the 1745 capture of Fortress Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. His shipbuilding experience allowed him to build sleds to transport the cannon over the marshy ground. In 1749 he was hired by the Royal Navy to build a 50 gun warship HMS ''America'' at his shipyard. Robert William Meserve (January 12, 1909 – September 21, 1995) was an American trial lawyer from Boston, Massachusetts who served as president of the American Bar Association from 1972 to 1973. He also served as president of the American College of Trial Lawyers from 1968 to 1969 and as president of the Boston Bar Association from 1963 to 1965. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1965. Stan Meserve (born August 23, 1941 in Winslow, Maine) is a retired ''NASCAR Grand National'' driver who competed in one year of NASCAR racing. Career He earned a grand total $7,745 through his entire NASCAR racing career (which did not reach beyond 1968). Of the 31 races in which he participated in his career, Meserve had one top-ten finish in 4283 laps (2758.8 miles) of racing. He started and finished in 22nd place on average in his career and was a competitor at the 1968 Fireball 300. All of Meserve's races were done in a 1967 Dodge Charger vehicle. However, his later races for the Late Model Sportsman Series (which evolved into the Nationwide Series) and the Grand National North Series were done in a Chevrolet Chevelle vehicle and a Ford Granada vehicle. Walter Joseph Meserve (March 10, 1923 – November 5, 2023) was an American academic, playwright, critic, and author of books on theater. He is a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Meserve's ''An Outline History of American Drama'' has been called "a highly valuable "vest pocket" history of the American drama which should be on the shelf of every teacher of contemporary theater, every critic, and every student with an interest in modern drama". The ''American Historical Review'' said his book about American drama during the Andrew Jackson era "brings much of Quinn's carefulness and Odell's enthusiasm to embroidering their work", but added that "Meserve's gestures to the new are disappointingly fainthearted". The Wright Valley () is a large east–west trending valley, formerly occupied by a glacier but now ice free except for Wright Upper Glacier at its head and Wright Lower Glacier at its mouth, in Victoria Land, Antarctica. It was named by the VUWAE (1958-59) for Sir Charles Wright, for whom the BrAE (1910-13) named the glacier at the mouth of this valley. The Wright Valley is the central one of the three large McMurdo Dry Valleys in the Transantarctic Mountains, located west of McMurdo Sound. Wright Valley contains the Onyx River, the longest river in Antarctica, Lake Brownworth, the origin of the Onyx River, and Lake Vanda, which is fed by the Onyx River.
