The Merkur Funicular Railway () is a metre gauge funicular, funicular railway in the town of Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The line ascends the town's ''Hausberg'', the Merkur (Baden-Baden), Merkur (668.3 m), atop which is the Merkur Tower. The line opened in 1913 and closed in 1967. It was reopened on 27 April 1979. Merkur Tower
The Merkur Tower () is an observation tower on the Merkur near Baden-Baden, at 8°16'50" E and 48°45'52" N. The tower has been in use since 8 April 1950 by the former SWF (now SWR) as a transmission tower for FM-radio and, since 1953, television. At the end of the 1970s the tower was completely renovated and its radio equipment modified. An underground equipment room for radiotechnical equipment was built, and a new tower was constructed, adjoining the older tower. In this tower also an elevator for visitors was installed. Built between autumn 1980 and December 1982, it is twenty three metres high, constructed from steel and concrete, and carrying a forty metre high aerial mast with FM- and TV-aerials on its top. In rail transport, track gauge is the distance between the two rails of a railway track. All vehicles on a rail network must have Wheelset (rail transport), wheelsets that are compatible with the track gauge. The grade (US) or gradient (UK) (also called stepth, slope, incline, mainfall, pitch or rise) of a physical feature, landform or constructed line is either the elevation angle of that surface to the horizontal plane, horizontal or its tangent. The Merkur or Großer Staufenberg is a mountain, , in the Northern Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the '' Hausberg'' of Baden-Baden and located between the spa town and the town of Gernsbach. Name The mountain is named after the Ancient Roman god of trade and commerce, Mercury, to whom a Roman votive stone on the summit is dedicated. The ''Merkurstein'' has been recorded since the 16th century. Today, there is a cast of the original votive stone on the summit plateau; its prototype is in the Baden-Baden Municipal Museum collection.
