The Meridian Micropolitan Statistical Area is a micropolitan area in east central Mississippi that covers two counties - Clarke, Kemper and Lauderdale. Enterprise, Clarke County, Mississippi
Enterprise is a town in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 526 at the 2010 census. History Enterprise was so named "to denote the policy of their inhabitants". The town was founded in 1834, by John J. McRae, who later served as Governor of Mississippi. In the early days of the American Civil War, a military training camp was set up at Enterprise for newly created Confederate units. After the fall of Vicksburg and Port Hudson in July, 1863, thousands of paroled Confederate troops were sent to a camp at Enterprise to await exchange. De Soto, Mississippi
De Soto is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States. It was first named as a CDP in the 2020 Census which listed a population of 274. History De Soto was named after Hernando de Soto. De Soto was one of four principle towns established in Clarke County before the American Civil War. Established along the Chickasawhay River before the arrival of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, construction of housing in De Soto may have started as early as 1845 and by 1858 churches were being erected. The town had a Post Office and two churches in 1900 when the population was 258. A post office operated under the name De Soto from 1856 to 1978. At one point, De Soto was home to two sawmills, a drug store, a hotel, a blacksmith, and multiple general stores. The settlement is named for Samuel Dale, Lauderdale County's first representative in the Mississippi Legislature. Bogue Chitto, Mississippi
Bogue Chitto is a census-designated place (CDP) situated in Kemper and Neshoba counties, Mississippi. The population was 864 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Reservation and the population is 93% Choctaw. History During Freedom Summer of 1964 and a voter registration drive, three civil rights workers: James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were killed by Ku Klux Klan members about 10 miles north of Bogue Chitto on the night of June 21, 1964. Their bodies were discovered by the FBI and other law enforcement, buried in an earthen dam on the Old Jolly Farm in Neshoba County, Mississippi in August 1964. The murders galvanized national attention and contributed to passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The events were the subject of the 1988 drama film ''Mississippi Burning''. Stonewall, Mississippi
Stonewall is a town in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,088 at the 2010 census. History A cotton mill was established here in 1868. The town was named after Confederate Army General Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall's major industry from 1868 until 2002 was the cotton mill which operated as Burlington Industries from 1962 onward. In 2002, Burlington announced that it would be closing the Stonewall plant and put 850 people out of work. Geography The Chickasawhay River forms the western boundary of the town.
