Mercure Hotels
Mercure is a French midscale hotel chain owned by Accor. Created in 1973 in France, the brand was acquired by Accor in 1975, and subsequently became a major part of the company's midscale hotel portfolio, alongside Novotel. As of 2021, Mercure operated 949 hotels in 63 countries. Outside Europe, Accor additionally uses the Grand Mercure brand, an upscale subsidiary in currently 12 countries. History Foundation and early years The first Mercure hotel was established in 1973 in Saint-Witz, France. In 1975, Mercure was acquired by Accor (then Novotel-SIEH) and became Novotel's complementary midscale brand within the group. In 1989, Mercure opened its 100th hotel. In 1991, following Accor's acquisition of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, the ''Altea'' hotels acquired through this deal became Mercure hotels. Dassault Mercure
The Dassault Mercure was a twin-engined narrow-body jet-powered airliner developed and manufactured by French aircraft firm Dassault Aviation. According to Dassault, it was the first large-scale European cooperative civil aeronautics programme. During 1967, the Mercure was proposed as a French competitor to the American Boeing 737. It was Dassault's first venture into the commercial jet airliner market, the company having traditionally built fighters and executive jets. On 28 May 1971, the prototype conducted its maiden flight, while the type entered service on 4 June 1974 with French airline Air Inter. Attempts were made to market the type in the US, including partnerships with American manufacturers Douglas, Lockheed and General Dynamics, with the vision of producing it in the United States. ''Mercure'' (''Mercury'', or ''The Adventures of Mercury'') is a 1924 ballet with music by Erik Satie. The original décor and costumes were designed by Pablo Picasso and the choreography was by Léonide Massine, who also danced the title role. Subtitled "Plastic Poses in Three Tableaux", it was an important link between Picasso's Neoclassical and Surrealist phases and has been described as a "painter's ballet". ''Mercure'' was commissioned by the Soirées de Paris stage company and first performed at the Théâtre de la Cigale in Paris on June 15, 1924. The conductor was Roger Désormière. ''Mercure'' is a Belgian novel by Amélie Nothomb. It was first published in 1998. Plot The novel is set on the island of Mortes-Frontières, whose name (literally meaning "Dead Borders") is aptly chosen to reflect its ominous, isolated nature. Shrouded in secrecy and tightly controlled by the authoritarian Captain O. Loncours and his men, the island enforces strict surveillance and harsh treatment of outsiders. Françoise, a young nurse, is summoned to this strange place to care for Hazel, a young woman who has been monstrously disfigured by a bombing. Upon arrival, Françoise discovers a bizarre house where all reflective objects—mirrors, spoons, anything capable of showing a reflection—have been removed. ''R v Mercure'' was a ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1988, dealing with language rights in the province of Saskatchewan.''R v Mercure'', 9881 SCR 234. The appellant demanded the right to a statutory provision in Saskatchewan governing a speeding ticket be expressed in French as well as the right to have a trial conducted in French. English and French are both considered official languages in Canada. Lower courts had denied him this right, so he sought appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. However, the appellant died before the Supreme Court could hear his appeal. The () was originally a French gazette and literary magazine first published in the 17th century, but after several incarnations has evolved as a publisher, and is now part of the Éditions Gallimard publishing group. The gazette was published from 1672 to 1724 (with an interruption in 1674–1677) under the title (sometimes spelled ; 1672–1674) and (1677–1724). The title was changed to in 1724. The gazette was briefly suppressed (under Napoleon) from 1811 to 1815 and ceased publication in 1825. The name was revived in 1890 for both a literary review and (in 1894) a publishing house initially linked with the symbolist movement. Since 1995 has been part of the Éditions Gallimard publishing group.
