The Merchant Marine of Switzerland is the largest merchant navy of a landlocked country. Somewhat unusual for a landlocked country, Switzerland has a long tradition of civilian navigation, both on its lakes and rivers, and on the high seas. History The Swiss merchant navy was founded in 1941, with the purpose of supplying Switzerland with basic goods during the Second World War. As of 2016, its essential mission remains supplying the country with goods in times of crisis. Tonnage is a measure of the cargo-carrying capacity of a ship, and is commonly used to assess fees on commercial shipping. The term derives from the taxation paid on '' tuns'' or casks of wine. In modern maritime usage, "tonnage" specifically refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship. Containerization is a system of intermodal freight transport using intermodal containers (also called shipping containers and ISO containers). Gottlieb Duttweiler (15 August 1888 – 8 June 1962) was a Swiss businessman and politician, founder of both the Migros chain of grocery stores and the Alliance of Independents (''Landesring der Unabhängigen'') party. Life and work Duttweiler was born in Zürich. Starting with five vehicles in 1925, his Migros eventually opened stores and is today one of the main grocery chains in Switzerland. The original secret to his success was bringing daily necessities to the consumer by excluding the middlemen. As a result, many producers initially chose to boycott Migros, and Duttweiler's Migros would itself manufacture or package those missing products. In 1941, Gottlieb and his wife Adele Duttweiler transferred ownership of Migros to their customers, as a cooperative. Adele Duttweiler (29 December 1892 – 27 May 1990) was a Swiss philanthropist and the wife of Gottlieb Duttweiler, founder of both the Migros group and the LdU political party. Early life Adele Bertschi was born on 29 December 1892 in Horgen on Zürichsee lakeshore. Her mother was Maria, née Antille, her father was Samuel, who had emigrated to the US, where he founded a ribbon weaving mill. When his first wife died, he returned as a "made man" back to Switzerland. He married Maria Antille, who originates from the Canton of Valais. The couple moved to Horgen, where they acquired the "In Rüsler" farm where Adele grew up. Her father died when Adele was at the age of eight years. Adele's mother was described as a ''purposeful and spirited woman who had to cope with all sorts of harassment after the early death of her man''.
