Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House, Perth, Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 Electoral regions of Western Australia, electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Colin De Grussa
Colin Stephen de Grussa (born 17 April 1973) is an Australian politician. He was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2017 state election, as a National Party member in Agricultural Region. His term began on 22 May 2017. Prior to this election, de Grussa worked in sales and support for a large computer wholesaler, before undertaking an Associate Degree in Agriculture at Muresk Institute and returning to the family farm. De Grussa was the state president of the National Party from 2013 to 2015. In 2014, de Grussa was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship for research into how farmers interact with government for the benefit of their industry. Shooters, Fishers And Farmers Party
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party (SFF) is an Australian political party. It primarily advocates for increased funding and services for rural and regional Australia, protecting the right to farm, enhancing commercial and recreational fishing, tougher sentencing for illegal firearm trade and usage, and relaxing gun control for law abiding citizens. The party was formed in 1992, and was known simply as the Shooters Party. It initially operated only in New South Wales, but has since expanded into other states. It was registered with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) in 2007, and contested its first federal election the same year. In July 2009, the party changed its name to the Shooters and Fishers Party, and in April 2016, the name was changed to its current name. Alannah MacTiernan
Alannah Joan Geraldine Cecilia MacTiernan (born 10 January 1953) is an Australian politician. Since 1988, she has served in politics at a federal, state, and local level, including as a minister in the Western Australian state governments of Geoff Gallop, Alan Carpenter, and Mark McGowan. She is best known for her role as the minister for planning and infrastructure during the construction of the Mandurah line. Born in Melbourne, she moved to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and later with a law degree. She worked for the Department of Employment before practising as a lawyer between 1986 and 1992. During this time, she served on the Perth City Council as well. Colin Holt (politician)
Colin James Holt (born 31 August 1963) is an Australian politician who was a National Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 2009 to 2021, representing South West Region. He served as a minister in the government of Colin Barnett between December 2014 and August 2016. Early life Holt was born in Goomalling, Western Australia, to Violet May (née Waldock) and Frank Holt. He attended high school in Perth, at Lockridge Senior High School, and then went on to study zoology at the University of Western Australia. After graduating, Holt worked for the state government's Department of Agriculture as a community development consultant, living for periods in Derby, Halls Creek, Bruce Rock, Carnarvon, Narrogin and Australind. Nicolas Pierre Goiran (born 15 October 1977) is an Australian politician who has been a member for the South Metropolitan Region of the Western Australian Legislative Council (MLC), the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, since 22 May 2009. A member of the Liberal Party, Australia's major right-wing political party, Goiran is a conservative Christian. He is pro-life, and opposes same-sex marriage, euthanasia and surrogacy. He has been outspoken on the issue of elder abuse, and he supports COVID-19 vaccinations but opposes vaccine mandates. Adele Farina (born 31 March 1964) is an Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 2001 to 2021, representing South West Region. She served as parliamentary secretary to three different state ministers: the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Tourism, Culture and the Arts, and Minister for Disability Services, Citizenship, Multicultural Interests and Women's Interests. Early career Farina was born in Perth, and studied arts and law at the University of Western Australia. She was subsequently employed as the private secretary to Bob Pearce, Environment Minister in the Lawrence government, but this ended abruptly in 1992, when she was charged by police with stealing $3,280 worth of postage stamps from the state. Donna Evelyn Mary Faragher (née Taylor; born 12 September 1975) is an Australian politician who has been a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia since 2005, representing East Metropolitan Region. She became a minister in the government of Colin Barnett in 2008, becoming the youngest woman to hold ministerial office in Western Australia. Early life Faragher was born in Perth to Joan Betty Light and Donald Franklin Taylor, both of whom were police officers. Electoral Region Of South West
The South West Region is a multi-member electoral region of the Western Australian Legislative Council the South West, Peel and part of the Great Southern regions of the state. It was created by the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'', and became effective on 22 May 1989 with seven members who had been elected at the 1989 state election three months earlier. At the 2008 election, it was reduced to six members. The region includes the cities of Albany, Bunbury and Mandurah. Legislation to abolish the region, along with all other Western Australian Electoral Regions was passed in November 2021, with the 2025 state election to use a single state-wide electorate of 37 members. Diane Marie Evers (born 2 July 1963) is an Australian politician. She was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2017 state election, as a Greens member in South West Region.
