This is a list of members of the 12th Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1896 to 1899, as elected at the 1896 colonial election held between 10 March 1896 and 11 April 1896 (due to problems of distance and communications, it was not possible to hold the elections on a single day). Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the '' Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Assembly first sat in May 1860 and produced Australia's first Hansard in April 1864. Electoral District Of Albert
Albert was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland which existed from 1887 to 1949 and 1959 to 2017. Albert was named for the Albert River, which runs through the electorate and separates Logan City from City of Gold Coast. It was first created in a redistribution in 1887 ahead of the 1888 colonial election and continued to exist (with various boundary alterations) until 1949, when the Darlington and Southport electorates were created. In 1959, the electorate was established again. The 1971 and 1977 redistributions greatly reduced the area of the electorate and minor changes were made in 1991, including the loss of Carbrook in the north and coastal areas below Paradise Point in the south. Its consistently changing boundaries together with its existence in a high-growth area do not provide consistent political leanings over time, although it showed more inclination towards the Labor Party over time than any other Gold Coast seat. Electoral District Of Mackay
Mackay is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district in North Queensland, Australia, encompassing the inner suburbs of the city of Mackay, Queensland, Mackay. Outer suburbs of the city are included in the neighbouring electorates of Electoral district of Mirani, Mirani and Electoral district of Whitsunday, Whitsunday. Mackay was held by the Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), Labor Party for all but five years from 1915 to 2024. Labor's dominance in the seat began in 1915 when it was won by William Forgan Smith, who served as Premier of Queensland from 1932 to 1942. He retired undefeated in 1942 and was replaced by long-serving backbencher Fred Graham (politician), Fred Graham. who held it until his retirement in 1969. James Chataway
James Vincent Chataway (6 September 1852 – 12 April 1901) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Chataway was born in Warwickshire, England, the son of James Chataway and his wife Elizabeth (née Drinkwater) and was educated at Winchester College. He was at first destined for the Indian civil service but after a period of ill-health this was abandoned and he instead headed to Australia, arriving in 1873. After his arrival he was in Victoria and New South Wales getting pastoral experience before arriving in Queensland where he worked as an auctioneer and owned a livery stable. He then took up an interest in ''Eton Plantation'' in the Mackay region before taking up the role as editor of the Mackay Mercury in 1883 and three years later owner of the newspaper. In 1892 he established the ''Mackay Sugar Journal'' and ''Tropical Cultivator''. On 8 December 1882 Chataway married Jessie Carlyle Little and together had two sons and two daughters. The seat is one of four within the Townsville urban area in North Queensland, and covers the Eastern and Northern suburbs of the City of Townsville as well as Magnetic Island and Palm Island. William Castling
William Joseph Castling (1838 – 7 June 1906) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Castling was born in Northallerton, Yorkshire, the son of Robert Castling and his wife Jane (née Haw) and was educated in Ipswich. He arrived at Dalrymple, Queensland in 1863 and worked the goldfields in the area before purchasing a half share in a Townsville wholesale butchery in 1876 which by 1880 employed 40 people. On 11 November 1872 he married Mary Townsend in Townsville and together had 5 sons and 4 daughters. Electoral District Of Fitzroy (Queensland)
Fitzroy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district was based in central Queensland, west of Rockhampton. It included the towns of Baralaba, Blackwater, Duaringa, Dysart, Mount Morgan and Wowan as well as some of Rockhampton's outer suburbs. The electorate was first contested in 1992. An earlier district based in the same region was also called Fitzroy. It was first contested in 1888 and abolished in 1960. In 2008, Fitzroy was abolished—with effect at the 2009 state election—as a result of a redistribution undertaken by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. Its former territory and voters were divided between the districts of Callide, Gregory, Mirani and Rockhampton.
