This is a list of members of the 10th Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1888 to 1893, as elected at the 1888 colonial election held between 28 April 1888 and 26 May 1888 (due to problems of distance and communications, it was not possible to hold the elections on a single day). The election was a decisive defeat for Samuel Griffith's Liberals, with Thomas McIlwraith's Conservatives becoming ascendant. During the term, a number of Liberals and Independents joined the Ministry, and by the end of the term, the terms "Ministerial" and "Opposition" were being used to describe members. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the '' Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Assembly first sat in May 1860 and produced Australia's first Hansard in April 1864. Electoral District Of Rockhampton
Rockhampton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. Wedged between the electoral districts of Keppel to the east and Mirani to the west, Rockhampton encompasses the bulk of the regional city of Rockhampton and many of its outlying developed areas, including the community of Gracemere. History In 1864, the ''Additional Members Act'' created six additional electoral districts, each returning 1 member: * Clermont * Kennedy * Maryborough * Mitchell * Rockhampton * Warrego The first elections in these six electorates were held in 1865 (that is, during a parliamentary term and not as part of a general election across Queensland). Albert Callan
Albert James Callan (December 1839 – 9 May 1912) was a Company director, and a member of both the Queensland Legislative Council and Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Callan was born in Dublin, Ireland to John Bartholomew Callan and his wife Isabella (née Duthie) and educated at Jesuit's College, Dublin. Political career Following the resignation of Robert Lyons, he entered state politics in 1889, winning a by-election for the seat of Fitzroy. Callan held the seat until the 1902 state election which he did not contest. Callan was then appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in July 1902, remaining a member till his death ten years later. Personal life Callan married Ellen Milford in 1870, and together had four children. He was a director of Walter Reid & Co., Mt Morgan Gold Mining Co., and the National Bank. Electoral District Of Burnett
Burnett is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in central Queensland, Australia. It covers most of the coastal region south of Gladstone, as well as coastal and inland regions completely surrounding the district of Bundaberg. Towns within its boundaries include Miriam Vale, Agnes Water, Rosedale, Bargara, Woodgate and Childers. The Burnett River flows through the electoral district, hence its name. James John Cadell
James John Cadell, was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Burnett from 11 July 1891 - 28 March 1896. Early life ''James John Cadell'' was born 5 November 1843 in the Hunter River region, New South Wales, Australia. He was educated at Windsor, New South Wales by Judge Carey. James John Cadell married Elizabeth Hume Dight in Workworth, New South Wales in 1871 and together they had 2 sons and 8 daughters. Before his parliamentary career James John Cadell was a pastoralist at Kitikarara Station. He managed Peel River Station for father (1861–70). In partnership with John Charles Clark-Kennedy he purchased Ideraway Station at Gayndah, Queensland in 1870. The partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in June, 1873, after which Ideraway was controlled by Cadell. Electoral District Of Bulimba
Bulimba is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate covers the inner eastern suburbs of Brisbane. It is bounded on the north and the west by the Brisbane River and, as at the 2009 election, covers the suburbs of Bulimba, Balmoral, Cannon Hill, Hawthorne, Morningside, Norman Park, Murarrie and Seven Hills. The boundaries have changed relatively little since 1923; prior to that, the boundaries extended as far east as Wynnum and as far south-east as Mount Gravatt and Cleveland. John Francis Buckland
John Francis Buckland (1825–1910) was an auctioneer and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Private life John Francis Buckland was born in Runnymede, Wraysbury, England in 1832 in a farmhouse that was a former hunting lodge of King John. He immigrated to Queensland in 1862 from England. His wife was Ellen Gertrude Ashton, daughter of Joseph Ashton and Mary Hewison. Buckland died on 21 September 1910 and was buried on 22 September 1910 in Nundah Cemetery.Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths & Marriages. William Villiers Brown
William Villiers Brown (1843 – 29 April 1915) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and the Queensland Legislative Council. Public life Brown was the member for Townsville in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1885 to 1888 and from 1891 to 1893. He was appointed a member of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1901 to his death in 1915. He served as a minister without portfolio in Robert Philp's government from 1907 to 1908. Maurice Hume Black
Maurice Hume Black (15 December 1835 – 16 August 1899) was an Australian politician, member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Black was a grand-nephew of the celebrated Joseph Hume, Member for Montrose in the British House of Commons. He was born in London, England and in 1861 married Maria Frederica Davies, a niece of the great statesman, George Canning. Having emigrated to Victoria (Australia) in 1852, Black left the goldfields of that colony to try his luck in pastoral pursuits in South Australia, subsequently going to the Riverina, and in 1864 to Queensland. Black was the inventor of a steam sheep-washing process, and went into sugar planting in the Mackay district of Queensland in 1871. Electoral District Of Moreton
The electoral district of Moreton was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. It was first created in a redistribution ahead of the 1878 colonial election, and existed until the 1912 state election. Moreton replaced the former district of East Moreton, James Francis Garrick being the last member for East Moreton. Moreton was abolished in 1912, replaced by the Electoral district of Murrumba.
