The House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameralism, bicameral Parliament of Australia, the upper house being the Australian Senate, Senate. Its composition and powers are set out in Chapter I of the Constitution of Australia. The term of members of the House of Representatives is a maximum of three years from the date of the first sitting of the House, but on only 1910 Australian federal election, one occasion since Federation has the maximum term been reached. Mel Bungey
Melville Harold "Mel" Bungey (born 30 August 1934) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1974 to 1983, representing the seat of Canning for the Liberal Party. Early life Bungey was born on 30 August 1934 in Gnowangerup, Western Australia. He was educated at Wesley College, Perth, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Australia, majoring in economics. Bungey served in the Citizen Military Forces from 1951 to 1958. After graduating from university he worked for the Prime Minister's Department in Perth and Canberra. He later returned to Western Australia to work on the family property at Borden. Prior to his election to parliament, Bungey was active in the Farmers' Union of Western Australia and served as vice-president of its wool section. Division Of Diamond Valley
The Division of Diamond Valley was an Australian Electoral Division in Victoria. The division was created in 1969 and abolished in 1984. It was named for the Diamond Creek area. At the time of abolition, it was located in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, including Doncaster, Greensborough, Eltham and Templestowe. When it was initially created in 1969, the division replaced parts of the Division of Lalor and Division of Deakin. At the time, not only did it cover the Doncaster, Greensborough, Eltham and Templestowe areas (previously part of Deakin), but it also covered an even larger area to the north, extending up to the towns of Whittlesea and Kinglake West outside Melbourne (previously part of Lalor). In the 1977 redistribution, it lost most of these formerly-Lalor northern portions to the Division of Scullin, effectively shrinking its area by more than half. Neil Brown (Australian Politician)
Neil Anthony Brown (born 22 February 1940) is an Australian former politician. He was deputy leader of the Liberal Party and deputy opposition leader from 1985 to 1987, under John Howard. He served as Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs (1981–1982) and Minister for Communications (1982–1983) in the Fraser government. Early life Brown grew up in Essendon, in Melbourne's inner north. His father Alexander Brown was an electrical mechanic. He attended Moonee Ponds Central School and University High School, and went on to study law at the University of Melbourne. During his studies he worked part-time at the office of the Victorian Public Solicitor. He was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1964, and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980. John Joseph Brown AO (born 19 December 1931) is a retired Australian politician. He served in the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1990, representing the Division of Parramatta for the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He held ministerial office in the Hawke government as Minister for Administrative Services (1983–1984), Sport, Recreation and Tourism (1983–1987), and Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories (1987). The Division of Hunter is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. The division was named after Captain John Hunter, the second Governor of New South Wales. It covers rural, regional and suburban areas centred on the Hunter Valley, including the towns of Singleton, Muswellbrook and Cessnock. It also extends into parts of Greater Newcastle, covering suburbs such as Cameron Park, Edgeworth, Toronto and Morisset. Hunter is a largely blue-collar electorate. Hunter's economic base includes agriculture and mining, being dominated by a mix of rural and coal mining communities. Early life Brown was born in Pelaw Main and educated at Pelaw Main Primary School, Kurri Kurri Junior Technical High School, Maitland Boys High School, the University of Sydney ( B.Ec), Sydney Teachers' College ( Dip.Ed), Broken Hill Technical College and the University of New England. The Division of Barton is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. It is located in the inner south west of Sydney. It is currently represented by Labor MP Ash Ambihaipahar. History The division was created in 1922 and is named for Sir Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia. For much of its history, Barton has been a marginal seat, held by the Australian Labor Party for most of the time after 1940, but won by the Liberals (or their predecessors) at "high-tide" elections.
