Vice Admiral Melvin Gene Williams Jr. (born November 3, 1955) is an American retired officer in the United States Navy. He is the former Commander, U.S. Second Fleet and former director, Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Center of Excellence. After military service, Williams served for two years as a Presidential Appointee at the US Department of Energy. He was the Associate Deputy Secretary of Energy; 2011-2013- responsible for day-to-day Management and Operations of the Department of Energy (reporting to the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary of Energy). Since 2013, he has served in academia, and has been designated as a Joint Service Officer (JSO). He and his father are the only pair of African Americans wherein the father reached a top enlisted rank and the son a top officer rank. Melvin Douglas "Little Melvin" Williams (December 14, 1941 – December 3, 2015) was an African-American actor, author, entrepreneur, public speaker, educator, community activist, gambler and reformed drug trafficker. Considered a drug kingpin in the 1960s, Williams was known for trafficking heroin in Baltimore before he was sentenced to prison in 1985. After his release he began working as a community activist to help reform the lives of underprivileged minorities and youth. He later appeared as “The Deacon” in the HBO series ''The Wire'' and served as an inspiration for the show. Early life Williams was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Melvin Williams (born February 2, 1979) is an American former professional football defensive end who played two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. He was selected by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL draft after playing college football at Kansas State University. Williams was also a member of the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and New Orleans VooDoo. Early life Melvin Williams was born on February 2, 1979, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a three-year letterman in both football and basketball at Mehlville High School in Mehlville, Missouri. As a junior in 1995, he recorded 68 solo tackles, 48 assisted tackles, and 11 sacks on defense while also catching nine touchdowns passes as a tight end on offense.
