''Mellow'' is a 2CD compilation album by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan, released on 1 November 1997 (Recall 158). History In 1997, Recall Records reissued a large portion of Donovan's 1965 Pye Records catalogue with ''Mellow''. Universal Soldier (song)
"Universal Soldier" is a song written by singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The first released recording was a single by The Highwaymen, released in September 1963. The song was also released on Sainte-Marie's debut album '' It's My Way!'', released in April 1964. "Universal Soldier" was not an immediate popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. It became a hit a year later when Donovan covered it, as did Glen Campbell. Sainte-Marie said of the song: "I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all." Sholom Secunda (, , Alexandria, Kherson Governorate, Russian Empire13 June 1974, New York) was an American composer of Ukrainian-Jewish descent, best known for the tunes of "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" and " Donna Donna". Biography He was born in 1894 as Shloyme Abramovich Sekunda () in Aleksandria city, Kherson Governorate,Zalmen Zylbercweig, Leksikon fun Yidishn Teater (Volume 2), p. 1515-1518 Russian Empire (now in Ukraine) to the family of Abram Secunda and Anna Nedobeika. Aaron Zeitlin
Aaron Zeitlin (3 June 1898 – 28 September 1973) was a Jewish American educator and writer. He authored several books on Yiddish literature, poetry and parapsychology. Biography Zeitlin was born in Gomel Region, Uvarovichi, Russia (now Belarus) to Hillel Zeitlin and Esther Kunin. He spent his formative years in Gomel and Vilna. In 1920, he and his brother Elchanan traveled to Palestine (region), Palestine, and in 1921 they returned to Eastern Europe, settling in Warsaw. Zeitlin's literary abilities were apparent already in his youth when he contributed some articles to the Odessa-based children's journal ''Perachim'' and ''Ha-Shaḥar, Hashachar''. "Dona Dona", popularly known as "Donna, Donna", is a song about a calf being led to slaughter, written by Sholom Secunda and Aaron Zeitlin. Originally a Yiddish language song "Dana Dana" (in Yiddish דאַנאַ דאַנאַ), also known as "Dos Kelbl" (in Yiddish דאָס קעלבל, meaning ''The Calf''), it was a song used in a Yiddish play produced by Zeitlin. History "Dana Dana" was written for the Aaron Zeitlin stage production ''Esterke'' (1940–41) with music composed by Sholom Secunda. The lyrics, score, parts, and associated material are available online in the ''Yiddish Theater Digital Archives''. "Catch the Wind" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. Pye Records released "Catch the Wind" backed with "Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do?" as Donovan's debut release (Pye 7N.15801) in the United Kingdom on 28 February 1965. The single reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom singles chart. Hickory Records released the single in the United States in April 1965 (Hickory 45-1309), where it reached No. 23 in the United States Billboard Hot 100. Recording The single version of "Catch the Wind" was recorded at Olympic Studios in London. Donovan played guitar and sang on the recording, and was accompanied by nine session musicians: four viola players, four violin players and a string bass player. Mick Softley
Michael Softley (26 September 1939 – 1 September 2017) was an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. A figurehead during the British folk scene, Softley set up his own folk club, released three albums and worked with performers such as Mac MacLeod, Donovan, and Maddy Prior. Donovan covered two of Softley's songs ("Goldwatch Blues" and "The War Drags On") in 1965. Dave Berry also covered two of Softley's songs ("Walk Walk Talk Talk" and "I Love You Baby") in 1966. Shawn Phillips
Shawn Phillips (born February 3, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter and musician, primarily influential in the 1960s and 1970s. His work is rooted in folk rock but straddles other genres, including jazz fusion and funk. Phillips has recorded twenty-eight albums and worked with musicians including Donovan, Paul Buckmaster, J.
