Media In Edmonton
This is a list of media outlets for the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Many of these outlets – in particular the daily newspapers and the radio and TV broadcasters – also serve the numerous cities and communities in close proximity to Edmonton, including St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, and Spruce Grove. Radio Television CTV Two Alberta ceased broadcasting over-the-air in Edmonton on August 31, 2011. The cable television provider in Edmonton is Shaw Cable. Network programming from the United States is received on cable via affiliates from Spokane, Washington. While prime time in most of Canada runs from 8 pm to 11 pm, American prime time shows on weekdays run from 9 pm to midnight in Edmonton, since Spokane is in the Pacific Time Zone. Edmonton
Edmonton is the capital city of the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Alberta. It is situated on the North Saskatchewan River and is the centre of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, which is surrounded by Central Alberta, Alberta's central region, and is in Treaty 6, Treaty 6 territory. CHED (AM)
CHED (880 kHz) is a radio station licensed to Edmonton, Alberta. Owned by Corus Entertainment, it broadcasts a news/talk format, and first signed on in 1954. Its studios are located on 84th Street and Roper Road in Edmonton, while its transmitters are located southeast of Edmonton. The station originally began broadcasting on March 3, 1954, on the frequency of 1080 kHz, and moved to 630 kHz on May 14, 1963. On June 26, 2024, as part of cuts by the company, Corus disbanded CHED's All-news radio sister station CHQT, and began simulcasting CHED's programming on CHQT's 880 kHz frequency due to its better signal. After several months of simulcasting, CHED permanently moved to CHQT's signal on October 9, 2024. CHED broadcasts at 50,000 watts, using a non-directional antenna in the daytime. CHFA-FM
CHFA-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts the programming of Radio-Canada's Ici Radio-Canada Première network in Edmonton, Alberta. The station was launched in 1949 by a local non-profit consortium to bring French radio service to Edmonton, and was directly acquired by the network in 1974. The station serves the entire province of Alberta from its studios in Edmonton, although it also maintains a smaller bureau in Calgary. For most of its history, the station broadcast on the AM band on 680 kHz. On January 20, 2012, it was announced that Radio-Canada planned to close down CHFA's AM transmitter on 680, with its nested FM repeater in Edmonton, CHFA-10-FM on 101.1 MHz, swapping places with the much-stronger Espace musique station CBCX-FM-1 at 90.1 MHz. The Aboriginal Multi-Media Society (AMMSA) is an Aboriginal publisher in Canada. AMMSA was established in 1983 under the Alberta Societies Act and launched its first publication in March 1983 – simply titled ''AMMSA''. ''First Nations'' () is a term used to identify Indigenous peoples in Canada who are neither Inuit nor Métis. Traditionally, First Nations in Canada were peoples who lived south of the tree line, and mainly south of the Arctic Circle. CIWE-FM (89.3 MHz, "89.3 The Raven") is a radio station in Edmonton, Alberta. Owned by the Aboriginal Multi-Media Society (AMMSA), it broadcasts a freeform format targeting Central Alberta's First Nations communities. History Following the collapse of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Network (which broadcast on 89.3 MHz in Edmonton as CKAV-FM-4), the CRTC pursued new applicants for indigenous radio stations to fill its frequencies. The Aboriginal Multi-Media Society, owner of the Edmonton-based CFWE radio network, was granted licenses in Calgary and Edmonton. CJSR-FM (''CJSR FM 88'') is a Canadian campus-based community radio station, broadcasting at 88.5 FM in Edmonton, Alberta. The CJSR studios are located in the Students' Union Building of the University of Alberta, while its transmitter is located atop the building. CJSR is a volunteer-run campus and community radio station with a stated mission, "to enlighten and entertain our audience through high quality and diverse programming that constantly challenges the status quo". Programming CJSR plays a diverse range of musical genres and spoken-word programming. The station is home to nationally syndicated shows like Terra Informa. CKJR (1440 AM, "Sports 1440") is a radio station licensed to Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Owned by Stingray Radio, it broadcasts a sports talk format primarily serving the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. CKJR's studios are located alongside its metropolitan sister stations at the West Edmonton Mall. CKJR broadcasts with a non-directional pattern during the daytime hours and a directional signal (using a three-tower array) during nighttime hours. CKJR is the only station in Canada broadcasting at 1440 AM. History The station started in November 18, 1971 as CJOI on 1440 kHz, with 1,000 watts power.
