McCurdy's
McCurdy's (formally McCurdy and Company) was a Rochester, New York-based department store. Founded in 1901, the company was acquired by May Department Stores in 1994, but as a result of an antitrust settlement due to both McCurdy's and May's Kaufmann's stores being the predominant anchors in the area shopping malls, its stores were divested to The Bon-Ton Department store chain. History McCurdy's was started as McCurdy and Norwell Co. in 1901 by John Cooke McCurdy, who came to Rochester by way of Philadelphia and Ireland. The store was located at the corner of Main and Elm streets. This location would later form the basis of a mall at the location when Gilbert McCurdy, along with fellow department store owner Maurice Forman of B. Midtown Plaza (Rochester)
Midtown Plaza is a city district that is redeveloped for a variety of uses. It used to be an indoor shopping mall in downtown Rochester, New York, the first urban indoor mall in the United States. History The Midtown Plaza venture was announced to great fanfare in January 1958. Early tenants, in addition to B. Forman Co. and McCurdy's, included Wegmans, Lincoln Rochester Bank (now Chase Bank), the United States Postal Service and Trailways, as well as several national and local chain stores. The mall opened April 10, 1962. Designed by Victor Gruen, Midtown Plaza was dedicated on April 10, 1962 as the first downtown indoor mall in the United States. Greece Ridge Mall
The Mall at Greece Ridge is located in Greece, New York, a suburb of Rochester, New York, and managed by Wilmorite Properties. It contains 119 stores and restaurants in the main concourse. The mall is anchored by the traditional chains Macy's, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods, Burlington, Regal Cinemas, and a free-standing Target. The Marketplace Mall
The Marketplace Mall is a shopping center managed by Wilmorite and located on Hylan Drive in Henrietta, New York, a suburb of Rochester. The space at the southeast corner of West Henrietta Road ( NY 15) and Jefferson Road ( NY 252) was previously Hylan Airport, a general aviation facility home to Ray Hylan's school of aviation. In the 1970s, Hylan moved his school to the Rochester – Monroe County Airport and worked with the Wilmot family to develop the former airfield into commercial space. The Marketplace Mall opened on October 7, 1982 as the largest mall and the first regional mall located between New York City and Cleveland. Bon-Ton Holdings Inc. is an American online retailer and former department store chain founded in 1898. After rapid expansion in the 1990s and early 2000s, the original company had financial troubles, ultimately filing for bankruptcy in 2018 before being sold and liquidated. In September 2018, CSC Generation began operating as an online retailer headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana, with plans to open brick and mortar locations. In early 2021, CSC Generation sold all the acquired assets of Bon-Ton to New York-based BrandX.com, Inc in a private sale and included other brands such as Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson's, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, and Younkers. Skyview On The Ridge
Skyview on the Ridge is a future redevelopment of a shopping mall located in Irondequoit, New York, a suburb of Rochester. The mall opened in 1990 as Irondequoit Mall, featuring anchors McCurdy's, Sibley's, J. C. Penney, and Sears. On January 22, 2016, Angelo Ingrassia, a local real estate developer who specializes in developing premier properties, purchased the center. On August 29, 2017, current owner Angelo Ingrassia announced a plan to construct an office park along with retail, a community center, as well as a large residential component. Kaufmann's was a department store that originated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Summary The store was owned in the early 20th century by Edgar J. Kaufmann, patron of the famous Fallingwater house. In the post-war years, the store became a regional chain in the eastern United States, and was last owned by Federated Department Stores. At the height of its existence, it had some 59 stores in 5 states. Formerly part of May Department Stores prior to that company's acquisition by Federated on August 30, 2005, Kaufmann's operated as part of the Filene's organization in Boston, Massachusetts. On February 1, 2006, the Filene's/Kaufmann's organization was dissolved and the management of its stores was assumed by Macy's East and the new Macy's Midwest. Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Company, known informally as Sibley's, was a Rochester, New York-based department store chain with stores located exclusively in the state of New York. Its flagship store, at 228 East Main Street in downtown Rochester, also housed its headquarters and featured an elegant executive dining room on the top floor.
