McCafferty's
McCafferty's Coaches was an Australian family run interstate coach operator from 1940 to 2004. In October 2004 the McCafferty family sold its shares and its operations were rebranded as part of Greyhound Australia History McCafferty's Coaches was formed in April 1940 when Jack McCafferty began a service from Picnic Point to Rangeville in Toowoomba. In 1955 McCafferty's began operating a service from Toowoomba to the Gold Coast. Over the next few decades McCafferty's expanded to operate long-distance services throughout Queensland. In December 1980 McCafferty's entered the interstate coach market with a Brisbane to Sydney service extending to Melbourne in December 1983. On 22 December 1989, one of their coaches was involved in a disastrous bus crash near Kempsey, New South Wales in which 35 people were killed. Kempsey Bus Crash
The Kempsey bus crash killed 35 people and injured 41 on the Pacific Highway near Kempsey, New South Wales on 22 December 1989 when a McCafferty's Coaches coach operating an express service from Brisbane to Sydney collided head on with a Trans City Express coach operating an express service from Sydney to Brisbane. It remains the worst road crash in Australia. Crash The impact snapped seats from their anchor bolts. Seats and passengers were thrown forward in the vehicles with a terrific amount of force, which also trapped people and their luggage against the fronts of the buses. The force of the impact left the Sydney-bound coach, operated by McCafferty's Coaches, embedded in the front five rows of the cabin of the Brisbane-bound coach, operated by Trans City Express. The crash triggered a major emergency response as police, State Emergency Service and volunteer rescuers, firefighters and paramedics attended the crash. Greyhound Australia is an Australian coach operator that operates services in all mainland states and territories. It is owned by Entrada Travel Group. The company was established in 1928 and is not affiliated with similarly named companies in other countries. History Greyhound Coaches was formed in Toowoomba in 1928 by Russell Penfold with a service between Toowoomba and Brisbane. In 1956 and again in 1962 Greyhound attempted to enter the interstate passenger express field but without success. In 1968, after entering the market a third time, the company succeeded in establishing services between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide with Perth and Darwin added in the 1970s creating a national coach company. MotorCoach Australia was an Australian bus manufacturer in Kingston Logan, Brisbane. History MotorCoach Australia was formed in 1982 by former Denning employees Kevin Johnson and Dick White based in Kingston. It initially manufactured bus chassis with Caterpillar, Cummins and General Motors engine options. In 1986 it began to build bodies, both on its own chassis and those of other manufacturers. In 1995 it was placed in administration and purchased by Clifford Corporation with coaches built under the ''Austral Pacific Highlander'' name at the Austral Pacific plant in Geebung. Skennars
Skennars was an Australian interstate coach operator. History Clarrie Skennar began operating coach services in southern Queensland in 1956. By 1960 he was running a service from the Goondiwindi Shell Garage to the Barnes Auto Depot in North Quay, Brisbane using two Volkswagen Type 2, Volkswagen Kombi vans, using the Shell Garage beside the Ambulance Centre. At that time, Border Coaches operated an interstate service from Boggabilla to Brisbane, without a permit to pick up passengers within Queensland. Skennar purchased the service and operated it using two newly acquired side-loading vehicles (an Navistar International, International and a Dodge). Skennar next purchased the Stanthorpe to Warwick, Queensland, Warwick service operated by Grimley's Coaches; the termini were the Stanthorpe Shell Garage and the Grand Hotel in Grafton Street, Warwick. Jack McCafferty
John Francis McCafferty (1914-1999) was one of the pioneers of the bus and coach industry in Australia, founder of McCafferty's Coaches and mayor of Toowoomba for 9 years. McCafferty was born at Breakfast Creek, Brisbane on 11 March 1914, the son of James McCafferty, a railway engine driver, and Martha. During the depression in the 1930s, he operated a milk run with a horse and cart in Wilsonton. On 1 April 1940, McCafferty began his first bus run, purchasing the Picnic Point to Rangeville service. Later in 1950, he acquired a co-ordinated bus-rail link from Toowoomba to Brisbane. Over the following years, he acquired further services, building the McCafferty's Coaches business into an Australia-wide coach service. His coach business was later merged into Greyhound Australia. Denning Manufacturing was an Australian bus manufacturer in Acacia Ridge, Queensland, Acacia Ridge, Brisbane, Australia. In September 2019, it was acquired by Custom Bus, but its branding and operations were retained. As of December 2024, manufacturing operations have ceased.
