The following is a list of people who have served as mayor of the city of Houston in the U.S. state of Texas. John Whitmire
John Harris Whitmire (born August 13, 1949) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the List of mayors of Houston, 63rd mayor of Houston, Texas, since 2024. Whitmire was previously a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1973 until 1983, and the Texas State Senate from 1983 to 2023. In the state senate, he represented Texas Senate, District 15, District 15, which included much of northern Houston. In November 2021, Whitmire announced his candidacy for mayor of Houston in the 2023 Houston mayoral election, 2023 election. In November 2023, he advanced to a runoff with Representative Sheila Jackson Lee. He won the runoff in a landslide on December 9, 2023. Roy Hofheinz
Roy Mark Hofheinz (April 10, 1912 – November 22, 1982), popularly known as Judge Hofheinz or "The Judge", was a Texas state representative from 1935 to 1937 ( 44th legislature), county judge of Harris County, Texas from 1936 to 1944, and mayor of the city of Houston from 1953 to 1956. Early and personal life Hofheinz was born on April 10, 1912, in Beaumont, Texas. The Hofheinz family moved to Houston in 1924. He graduated from San Jacinto High School with highest honors as a champion debater and started work in 1928 at age 16 after his father died. In the summer of 1928, Hofheinz was an aide at the Democratic National Convention held in Houston; he befriended future U.S. senator and president Lyndon B. Johnson at the convention. Horace Baldwin Rice (March 29, 1861August 2, 1929) was a businessman and a mayor of Houston, Texas. He was important in the development of the Houston Ship Channel. Personal life Horace Baldwin Rice was born March 29, 1861, in Houston, Texas, to Captain Frederick Allen Rice and Charlotte M. Baldwin. Benjamin S. Campbell (July 27, 1858 – March 19, 1942) was an attorney and a mayor of Houston, Texas. Early life Benjamin S. Campbell was born on July 27, 1858, to Farquhar and Gabriella Singleton Campbell in Marengo County, Alabama. He moved with his family to Walker County, Texas, around 1859. Career Campbell did not attend law school, but served as a legal apprentice in the law offices of Abercrombie & Randolph, a firm based in Huntsville, Texas. The Texas bar accepted him in 1882. He worked for local government, first as the Walker County Attorney and then as prosecutor for the Twelfth Judicial District of Texas. In 1890, he partnered with Thomas Ball to form a new law firm. Joseph Jay Pastoriza
Joseph Jay "J. J." Pastoriza (January 8, 1857 – July 9, 1917) was a printer, real estate investor, and politician in Houston, Texas. He served both as Houston's Tax Commissioner and Mayor. Pastoriza was the first Hispanic mayor of the city of Houston. Pastoriza was orphaned and adopted as a young child in Houston. He started working in the printing business at about age twenty before establishing his own stationery and print shop. Pastoriza took an interest in public policy and politics after he retired from the printing business. He joined the Houston Single Tax League, and later traveled to study tax policy. Between 1911 and 1917 he served as Houston Tax Commissioner, establishing the Houston Single Tax Plan in 1912. Houston voters elected him Mayor of Houston in 1917.
