Mayor Of The Sheffield City Region
The mayor of South Yorkshire is a combined authority mayor, first elected in May 2018, who chairs the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. The office is currently held by Oliver Coppard. The office was created under the Cities and Local Government Devolution Act 2016 which allowed for the creation of 'Metro mayors' to lead combined authorities in England. Between 2018 and September 2021, the office was known as the "Mayor of the Sheffield City Region". The next election will take place in 2028. The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner was the police and crime commissioner of the South Yorkshire Police in South Yorkshire. The post was created on 22 November 2012, following an election held on 15 November 2012, and replaced the South Yorkshire Police Authority. The current South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner is Alan Billings of the Labour Party, who was elected in 2014 and again in 2016. 2024 South Yorkshire Mayoral Election
The 2024 South Yorkshire mayoral election was held on 2 May 2024 to elect the mayor of South Yorkshire as part of the 2024 United Kingdom local elections. The incumbent Labour and Co-operative Party mayor, Oliver Coppard, was re-elected. Background Oliver Coppard was elected as the second mayor of South Yorkshire in the 2022 South Yorkshire mayoral election. After consultation, the role was merged with the coterminous police and crime commissioner. The 2022 South Yorkshire mayoral election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect the Mayor of South Yorkshire, the leader of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. It took place alongside other local elections across the United Kingdom. The Labour and Co-operative Party candidate, Oliver Coppard, won the election in the second round with 71.4% of the vote. Daniel Owen Woolgar Jarvis (born 30 November 1972) is a British politician and former Army officer who has served as Minister of State for Security since July 2024, and as Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnsley North, formerly Barnsley Central, since 2011. Alan Roy Billings (born 7 October 1942) is an Anglican priest and Labour politician who served as the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner from 2014 to 2024. Early life and education Billings was born into a working-class family in Leicester in 1942. His father, Paul Billings, worked at Imperial Typewriters and his mother, Dorothy (), at Byfords Hosiery. He was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, Leicester. He went on to study Theology and Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1962-5), receiving a BA degree. He holds a Certificate in Education from Bristol University and further degrees from Leicester University and the New York Theological Seminary.
