Mayor Of The Halifax Regional Municipality
This is a list of mayors of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Halifax's first mayor, Walter Fitzgerald, was elected in 1996 after the municipality was created by amalgamation. The mayor of Halifax holds the highest office in the municipal government of Halifax. The mayor is elected at large during municipal elections, held every four years, and is the head of the Halifax Regional Council. The current mayor is former Halifax MP Andy Fillmore. Halifax is the capital and most populous municipality of the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Nova Scotia, and the most populous municipality in Atlantic Canada. It operated from 1880-1996 when all municipal units in the county (including the county government) were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Municipality. This is a list of mayors of the city Halifax, Nova Scotia. The City of Halifax is a former municipality in Nova Scotia which was amalgamated with the City of Dartmouth Town of Bedford and Halifax County to form the Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996. This is a list of mayors for the City of Halifax from 1841 until amalgamation. Prior to the formation of the city's elected government in 1841 the administration of the municipality was left in the hands of a selected group of men. The first mayor was elected to council and chosen for this position by his peers in council. Prior 1850 the mayor was elected amongst the elected councillors. Michael Savage (politician)
Michael John Savage (born May 13, 1960) is a Canadian politician who is currently serving as the 34th lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia. The son of John Savage, he immigrated to Canada with his father from Belfast, Northern Ireland at the age of six. Michael Savage served three terms as a Liberal member of Parliament for the riding of Dartmouth—Cole Harbour from 2004 to 2011, before serving three terms as the mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality from 2012 to 2024. His appointment as lieutenant governor was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in October 2024. Andy Fillmore (born April 25, 1966) is an American-born Canadian politician who has been the mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality since November 5, 2024. He previously served as a Liberal Party of Canada Member of Parliament for the riding of Halifax from 2015 until 2024. Early life and education Born in Bloomington, Indiana to Atlantic Canadian parents studying abroad in the United States, Fillmore returned to the family's native Nova Scotia at the age of four. In Halifax he attended Tower Road School, Halifax Grammar School, Gorsebrook Junior High, and Queen Elizabeth High School.
