Mayor Of Anchorage
This is a list of mayors of Anchorage, Alaska, United States. Anchorage, Alaska, Anchorage was incorporated as a city (Alaska), city on November 23, 1920. The Greater Anchorage Area Borough, which encompassed the city, was created in January 1964. The two were merged in a unified government called the Municipality of Anchorage on September 15, 1975. Under the current mayoral system, the mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage is elected in a non-partisan election to a three-year term and they are term limit, limited to two terms in office. Suzanne LaFrance
Suzanne M. LaFrance (born 1968 or 1969) is an American businesswoman and politician from the state of Alaska. She is the 38th mayor of Anchorage, having unseated incumbent mayor Dave Bronson in the 2024 election. Life and career LaFrance was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, but her family moved to Alaska when she was a young child, eventually settling in Palmer. She attended the University of Portland for her undergraduate degree and Purdue University for her master's degree, and prior to entering politics worked in business as a financial analyst and project manager. LaFrance served on the Anchorage Assembly from 2017 to 2023. Grant Reed
Grant Reed (c. 1869 – 1942) was Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1928–1929. Biography Reed moved to Skagway, Alaska in 1900 to work for the White Pass and Yukon Route In 1908, he took a job with the Alaska Steamship Company, and later worked for the Copper River and Northwestern Railway in Cordova. Reed went to work for the Alaska Railroad in 1920. In 1921, he moved to Anchorage and opened a women's apparel store called ''Reed's'' with his wife, Sadie. Reed was elected to two terms on the City Council, in 1923 and 1926. In 1928, Reed was elected to a single term as Mayor of Anchorage. He continued to work concurrently for the railroad. In 1936, Reed retired from the Alaska Railroad. A widower, he remarried in 1939. Ray Wolfe (September 23, 1905 – October 5, 1977) was Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1944 to 1945. Biography Ray G. Wolfe was born September 23, 1905, in West Liberty, Iowa. He moved to Alaska in January 1927 to work for his uncle in a sheet metal shop at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and C Street. William Alex Stolt
William Alex Stolt (July 5, 1900 – February 28, 2001) served as mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1941 to 1944. Biography William Alex Stolt was born to Finnish parents in Boston, Massachusetts on July 5, 1900. He spent the first ten years of his life in Finland, moving back to the United States after the death of his father, and his mother's remarriage to a man in Seattle. In 1913, the family moved to Juneau, and then Anchorage in 1917. He attended Anchorage High School, graduating in 1920. He studied electrical engineering at Washington State College, and in 1929 married Lily, another student from Anchorage. Stolt worked as an electrician, operating Bill's Electric Shop & Supply in Anchorage. In 1938, he filed for a Homestead Act claim on land near Otter Lake that was later incorporated into Fort Richardson. George Vaara
George Vaara (May 26, 1899 – July 26, 1976) was mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1940 to 1941. Biography George Vaara was born May 26, 1899, in Ada, Minnesota. He moved to Anchorage in 1923 and worked as a clerk in a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. In the 1930s, he opened a notions store called ''Vaara Varieties''. He was elected president of the Anchorage School Board in 1939. Vaara was elected mayor in 1940 in the midst of a housing shortage brought on by the arrival of military personnel preceding the construction of Fort Richardson. He served a single term. Vaara built a Pepsi-Cola plant on Fifth Avenue in 1943, selling it fifteen years later. In 1958, Vaara made a bid for nomination as the Republican candidate for governor of the new state of Alaska.
