Jessica Edwards
Jessica Edwards is a Canadian-American filmmaker known for her documentary ''Mavis!'' about musician and civil rights figure Mavis Staples. Early career Edwards received a BFA in Cinema from Montreal’s Concordia University and a master's degree in Media Studies from The New School in New York City. She began her career as a film publicist, working with filmmakers including Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola and David Cronenberg. In 2010, she produced and directed her first short documentary ''Seltzer Works'', about Kenny Gomberg, the last seltzer bottler in Brooklyn. Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel music, gospel singer and civil rights activism, activist. She rose to fame as a member of her family's band The Staple Singers, of which she is the last surviving member. During her time in the group, she recorded the hit singles "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again (song), Let's Do It Again". In 1969, Staples released her Mavis Staples (album), self-titled debut solo album. The Staple Singers
The Staple Singers were an American Gospel music, gospel, soul music, soul, and Rhythm and blues, R&B singing group. Pops Staples, Roebuck "Pops" Staples (December 28, 1914 – December 19, 2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (April 11, 1934 – February 21, 2013), Pervis (November 18, 1935 – May 6, 2021), and Mavis Staples, Mavis (b. July 10, 1939). Yvonne (October 23, 1937 – April 10, 2018) replaced her brother when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and again in 1970. Gary Hustwit is an American independent filmmaker and photographer. He is best known for his design documentaries, which examine the impact of trends in graphic design, typography, industrial design, architecture, and urban planning. Steve Cropper
Steven Lee Cropper (born October 21, 1941), sometimes known as "The Colonel", is an American guitarist, songwriter and record producer. He was the guitarist of the Stax Records house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, which backed artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor.
