Matthes Crest
Matthes Crest is an approximately mile-long fin of rock with two summits separated by a deep notch. It is a part of the Cathedral Range, which is a mountain range in the south-central portion of Yosemite National Park. The range is part of the Sierra Nevada (U.S.), Sierra Nevada. History and geology Matthes Crest is named for François E. Matthes, a cartographer and author who described the geology in the region where Matthes Crest lies. It was originally named Echo Ridge due to its proximity to the Echo Peaks. Matthes crest arose as a nunatak in the glacial field which covered Tuolumne during the last ice age. Climbing The first known ascent of Matthes Crest was by Jules Eichorn, Glen Dawson (mountaineer), Glen Dawson, and Walter Brem on June 16, 1931. Agneta Matthes
Agneta Wilhelmina Johanna van Marken-Matthes (4 October 1847 – 5 October 1909) was a Dutch entrepreneur. She and her husband were involved in the manufacture of yeast throughout their lives, and were engaged in the History of the co-operative movement, co-operative movement, taking care of their workers. Matthes and Van Marken created living quarters for workers in her hometown, Delft in South Holland, named Agnetapark after her. These are considered a model for the co-operative development and construction of garden cities (self-contained communities) for workers. Matthes founded and ran a Delft perfume factory, Maison Neuve, to take advantage of a by-product from the yeast factory. Heinrich Matthes
Heinrich Arthur Matthes (11 January 1902 – 16 December 1978) was a German SS commander during the Nazi era. He served as a deputy commandant of Treblinka extermination camp during the Operation Reinhard phase of the Holocaust in Poland. Matthes was appointed chief of the extermination area at Camp 2 where the gas chambers were built and managed by the SS personnel overseeing some 300 slave labourers disposing of corpses under penalty of death. He was tried in the 1964 Treblinka trials, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Life Matthes was born in 1902 in Wermsdorf, near Leipzig. His father was a senior male nurse. Matthes attended public elementary school for eight years. He then became a tailor, but changed careers to nurse. He trained at Sonnenstein and took his exam there. Josef Friedrich Matthes
Josef Friedrich Matthes (10 February 1886 – 9 October 1943) was head of the short lived Rhenish Republic. Biography He was born on 10 February 1886 in Würzburg. He moved to Switzerland in 1909 and worked as an editor in Baden. By 1918, he was editor of the Social Democratic Party of Germany's newspaper in Aschaffenburg. In 1921 he was convicted of libel and sentenced to 6 months in prison after accusing the major of hoarding food. He fled to Wiesbaden, then under French occupation, where he worked as editor of the magazine "The Torch" (''Die Fackel''). In early 1923, he was co-founder of the "Rheinischer Unabhängigkeitsbund", which sought independence for the Rhineland. In October 1923, he and his supporters seized the city of Koblenz in a putsch, founding the Rhenish Republic with Matthes as its leader. Klaus Matthes (January 20, 1931 – March 9, 1998) was a German mathematician, known as the founder of the theory of marked and infinitely divisible point processes. From 1981 to 1991 he was the director of the GDR Academy of Sciences' Institute of Mathematics in Berlin. Early years Matthes studied from 1948 to 1954 mathematics at Humboldt University of Berlin. He obtained his PhD from his alma mater in 1958, advised by Heinrich Grell and Kurt Schröder. In 1963 he received the habilitation, with Willi Rinow as one of the referees. Marion Charles Matthes (January 29, 1906 – November 30, 1980) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Education and career Born in De Soto, Missouri, Matthes attended Benton College of Law (now defunct), and read law in 1928 to enter the bar. He was in private practice in DeSoto and Hillsboro, Missouri from 1928 to 1955. He was deputy state finance commissioner in 1929, and was a city attorney for DeSoto from 1938 to 1940. In 1942, he was elected to the Missouri Senate, where he served until 1950. He was a member of the Missouri State Highway Commission from 1954 to 1955. Michael Matthes (born 26 February 1966, Stuttgart) is a French organist. Education Matthes received his first organ lessons privately from Marie-Claire Alain. In 1985, after three years of studies at the Paris Conservatory with Odile Pierre, he won first prize. Only one year later he won a first prize of excellence. Roland Matthes (, ; 17 November 1950 – 20 December 2019) was a German swimmer and the most successful backstroke swimmer of all time. Between April 1967 and August 1974 he won all backstroke competitions he entered. He won four European championships and three world championships in a row, and swam 19 world and 28 European records in various backstroke, butterfly and medley events.
