Masters Tournament (water Ski)
The Masters Water Ski Tournament is an annual water ski competition that has taken place since 1959. Competed each year on Memorial Day weekend, the event is held at Robin Lake in the Callaway Gardens resort area outside of Pine Mountain, Georgia. The tournament is one of the sport's oldest major championships along with the Water Ski World Championships (since 1949) and the U.S. National Water Ski Championships (since 1939). Water Ski
Water skiing (also waterskiing or water-skiing) is a surface water sport in which an individual is pulled behind a boat or a cable ski installation over a body of water, skimming the surface on one or two skis. The sport requires sufficient area on a stretch of water, one or two skis, a tow boat with tow rope, two or three people (depending on local boating laws), and a personal flotation device. In addition, the skier must have adequate upper and lower body strength, muscular endurance, and good balance. There are water ski participants around the world, in Asia and Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Memorial Day
Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It is the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States. Pine Mountain is a town in Harris and Meriwether counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 1,216. Joe Cash
George Joseph Cash (25 May 1937 – 13 July 1967) was an American professional water skier. During his career Cash won four Masters, three U.S. Nationals, and two World Championships. Biography Joe Cash was born on May 25, 1937, to James and Clara Cash in Shelbyville, TN. His family moved to Sarasota, FL in 1946, which happened to be a popular spot for waterskiing. He did not begin waterskiing until his parents bought him his first pair of skis for his 17th birthday, but within three years, he was competing in national and world championships. Cash got his first job when he joined the ski show at Sunshine Springs and Gardens near Sarasota. Nancie Rideout
Nancie Rideout Robertson (12 May 1938 – 21 January 1996) was an American professional water skier. During her competitive career, Rideout won the inaugural Masters and two World Championships in jump. Biography Rideout was born in Jackson, Michigan, and moved to Orlando, Florida at the age of 4. She started skiing after her father bought an outboard boat which came with a pair of water skis. Rideout's talents were noticed by Tommy Barlett, who added her as part of his traveling water ski show in 1955. The following year, she became a regular performer at Cypress Gardens. While performing in ski shows, Rideout was also exposed to competitive water skiing and became a prolific competitor. Notoriously a jumper, she won her first-ever jump tournament at the 1957 Dixie. Wakeboarding
Wakeboarding is a water sport in which the rider, standing on a wakeboard (a board with foot bindings), is towed behind a motorboat across its wake and especially up off the crest in order to perform aerial maneuvers.
