''Masekela'' is the eleventh studio album by South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela released via Uni Records label in 1969. Background The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California, possibly between 12 and 30 September 1968. Masekela performs mostly his own compositions. The tracks "Mace and Grenades" and "Gold" were later included on his 2004 album '' Still Grazing''. The track "Mace and Grenades" was issued as a single with "Riot" as the B-side. Hugh Masekela
Hugh Ramapolo Masekela (4 April 1939 – 23 January 2018) was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer and composer who was described as "the father of South African jazz". Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as " Soweto Blues" and " Bring Him Back Home". He also had a number-one US pop hit in 1968 with his version of " Grazing in the Grass". ''Still Grazing'' is a 2004 compilation album by South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela. The album is a retrospective collection of his compositions recorded over the period 1966–1974. The album is the soundtrack to Masekela’s autobiography of the same name. Reception Eric Ianelli of ''All About Jazz'' wrote: "Musically speaking, ''Still Grazing'' is strong; but then, in making a case for Masekela's career, it ought to be. Henry "Skipper" Franklin (born Henry Carl Franklin on October 1, 1940) is an American jazz double bassist. Career Franklin played on Hugh Masekela's 1968 number one single, "Grazing in the Grass," as well as with Masekela's band at the Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. In addition, Franklin played and recorded with Gene Harris and the Three Sounds, Hampton Hawes, Freddie Hubbard, Bobbi Humphrey, Willie Bobo, Archie Shepp, O.C. Smith, Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Curtis Amy, Teddy Edwards, and Sonny Criss. Arthur Adams (born December 25, 1943) is an American blues guitarist from Medon, Tennessee. Inspired by B.B. King and other 1950s artists, he played gospel music before attending college. He moved to Los Angeles, and during the 1960s and 1970s he released solo albums and worked as a session musician. In 1985 he was tapped to tour on bass guitar with Nina Simone, and he staged a comeback in the 1990s when he released ''Back on Track'', and became a respected Chicago blues player and bandleader in B.B. William Randall Henderson (March 19, 1926 – April 3, 2016) was an American television and film actor, and jazz singer. Biography Henderson was born in Chicago, Illinois. Henderson began his professional music career in 1952, performing in Chicago with Ramsey Lewis, and began recording as a leader after a move to New York in 1958. He subsequently recorded with jazz pianist Horace Silver on a vocal version of Silver's " Señor Blues" which was a jukebox hit (in the mid-1950s), and remains one of jazz label Blue Note's top-selling singles. Wilton Felder
Wilton Lewis Felder (August 31, 1940 – September 27, 2015) was an American saxophone and bass player, and is best known as a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders, later known as the Crusaders. Felder played bass on the Jackson 5's hits "I Want You Back"(1969) and "ABC" (1970) and on Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On"(1973). Biography Felder was born on August 31, 1940, in Houston, Texas and studied music at Texas Southern University. Wayne Henderson (musician)
Wayne Maurice Henderson (September 24, 1939 – April 5, 2014) was an American jazz fusion and soul jazz trombonist and record producer. In 1961, he co-founded the soul jazz/jazz fusion group The Jazz Crusaders. Henderson left the group (who by then had changed their name to The Crusaders) in 1976 to pursue a career in producing, but revived The Jazz Crusaders in 1995. In 2007, Henderson took a position with the California College of Music in Pasadena, California. Abdullah Ibrahim (born Adolph Johannes Brand on 9 October 1934), previously known as Dollar Brand, is a South African pianist and composer. His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church and Ragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the subgenre of Cape jazz. Within jazz, his music particularly reflects the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington.
