Maryland State Superintendent of Public Instruction is the nonpartisan (originally partisan) elected executive officer of the Maryland Department of Education, it is appointed by the Maryland State Board of Education. History Libertus Van Bokkelen was the first Maryland State Superintendent of Public Instruction 1864, heading the developing, supervision and advising of public school systems for the various counties and funded the new Maryland State Normal School (M.S.N.S.). Lillian M. Lowery served as Superintendent of the Maryland State Department of Education from July 2012 to September, 2015. Nancy Grasmick served as Superintendent of the Maryland State Department of Education from 1991 until June 30, 2011. Carey M. Wright is the current Maryland Superintendent of Schools. Maryland State Department Of Education
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is a division of the state government of Maryland in the United States. The agency oversees public school districts, which are 24 local school systems—one for each of Maryland's 23 counties plus one for Baltimore City. Maryland has more than 1,400 public schools in 24 public school systems, with a 2019 enrollment of approximately 900,000. Of the student body, 42% are on FARMS (i.e., qualify for Free And Reduced Meals) and 22% are Title 1 (i.e., schools with high percentages of poor children). MSDE is led by the State Superintendent of Schools and receives guidance from the Maryland State Board of Education. Libertus Van Bokkelen
Libertus Van Bokkelen (July 22, 1815 - November 1, 1889) was a reverend in the Protestant Episcopal Church and the first Superintendent of the Maryland State Department of Education. Early life He was born on July 22, 1815 in New York City. He was the second oldest in a family of thirteen children. His paternal grandfather emigrated to the United States from Holland in 1796, having ben exiled from the French government for his support for the House of Orange-Nassau. From nine years old, he received his education at various boarding schools, including the Union Academy in Long Island and the Flushing Institute in Flushing, Queens, where he was taught by Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg. Nancy Grasmick
Nancy S. Grasmick is the former Superintendent of the Maryland State Department of Education, serving from 1991 until June 30, 2011. Married to Baltimore businessman Lou Grasmick, who died in 2016, the couple also became active in various philanthropic endeavors. Early years and education Born Nancy Streeks, Grasmick was raised in Baltimore's Forest Park neighborhood. While still a teenager attending Western High School, she had a bout of temporary deafness as a reaction to medication. She said later that she was inspired by the example of Helen Keller and decided to devote her life to education. She received her doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University, her master's degree from Gallaudet University, and her bachelor's degree from Towson University. Carey Wright
Carey M. Wright is an American educator and consultant who has served as the Maryland Superintendent of Schools since 2023. She previously served as the Mississippi Superintendent of Education from 2013 to 2022, the state's first female state superintendent. Starting her education career in Maryland, she became superintendent for Montgomery County Public Schools's Office of Special Education and Student Services and chief academic officer and deputy chief of the District of Columbia Public Schools's Office of Teaching and Learning.
