Mary Byrne (mayor)
Mary Byrne (1917–2004) was the Mayor of Galway from 1975 to 1976 and again from 1984 to 1985. One of two children of Michael Byrne of Newry, County Down, and Brigid Kelly of Garafine, Ballymacward, County Galway, she trained as a nurse in the city's old Central Hospital and later worked as a staff-nurse at Galway Regional Hospital. She eventually became a Sister and worked in the Casualty Department for twenty-two years. She was a member of the Western Health Board from 1970 to 1988 representing General Nurses. She served as Chairperson of the Galway Branch of the Irish Nurses Organisation as well as being a member of its National Executive for many years. Politically active due to her father's influence, Byrne was an active member of Fianna Fáil from the 1940s, and successfully ran for election to Galway Corporation in 1967, serving eighteen years as a Councillor. Mary Byrne (born 3 November 1959) is a top 10 selling Irish singer and TV presenter based in Ireland and the UK. Mary rose to fame in 2010 after becoming a finalist on the seventh series of ''The X Factor''. Following her elimination in the live semi-final, she signed a record deal with Sony Music Ireland. Mary Ann Byrne
Mary Ann Byrne (9 September 1854 – 4 November 1894) was an Irish nationalist. Biography Mary Ann Byrne was born Mary Ann Moneypenny on Haddington Road, Dublin on 9 September 1854. She was the second daughter of a plasterer, Arthur Moneypenny and his wife, Frances (née Kelly). She married Frank Byrne in St Mary's Catholic Church, Dukinfield, Ashton-under-Lyne on 9 September 1876, with both living in Peel Street, Dukinfield, at the time. Committed to the Irish nationalist cause, she delivered the surgical knives used in the assassinations of the Permanent Under Secretary Thomas Henry Burke and the newly installed Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord Frederick Cavendish (the Phoenix Park Murders), to the Irish National Invincibles in February 1882 when she was seven months pregnant, concealing the knives under her skirts. Mary Elizabeth Byrne, M.A. (2 July 1880 – 19 January 1931) was an Irish linguist, author, and journalist. She translated the Old Irish Hymn, "Bí Thusa 'mo Shúile," into English as "Be Thou My Vision" in ''Ériu'' (the journal of the School of Irish Learning), in 1905. A linguist, Byrne received her education from the Dominican Convent in Dublin, and the National University of Ireland, where she graduated in 1905. Mary Freeman Byrne
Mary Freeman Byrne (née Keith) (4 October 1886 – 18 January 1961) was an American author who sometimes wrote under the pen name Marie Byrne. Byrne was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, and trained for the stage at the Leland Powers Theatrical School in Boston. She appeared in plays with such actors of the day as Joan Davis and Donald Meek. She gave up acting and settled in England after marrying Ferdinand Byrne, who had a medical practise in London. Mary Byrne later Mary O'Connell (1850 – 19 October 1936) was an Irish woman considered to be the chief witness of the apparition at Knock, County Mayo. Life Mary Byrne was born in 1850, the eldest daughter of the three children of Dominick and Margaret Byrne (née Bourke). Byrne was one of 15 people who witnessed an unusual sight at the gable end of the church on 21 August 1879, later the site of the Knock Shrine. She was brought there at 8:15pm by the housekeeper of the parish priest, Mary McCloughlin. Upon her arrival, Byrne saw three figures hovering 2 feet in the air, and was told by McCloughlin that two of the figures were the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. Byrne identified the third figure of Saint John the Evangelist, as he bore a resemblance to a statues at a church in Lecanvey, near Westport, County Mayo.
