James Martin White (usually known to as Martin White or J. Martin White) (1858 – 7 July 1928) was a wealthy Scottish businessman and Liberal Party politician. He also took a keen interest in the establishment of the scientific study of sociology in association with his boyhood friend Patrick Geddes and was an enthusiastic supporter of the development of the pipe organ. White was born in New York City, the son of wealthy jute merchant James Farquhar White and his wife Elizabeth Grundy. White Sr. had, in 1849, established a 'dry goods' company, J F White & Co. in New York selling a variety of imported and domestic textiles. However, with the onset of the American Civil War he had returned home to Scotland and leased Castle Huntly, Perthshire as the family home. In 1880 they bought and moved to a baronial castle at Balruddery, Angus, near the city of Dundee. Martin White is an English musician, comedian and animator. As well as performing solo with an accordion around the London comedy circuit, White also fronts the Mystery Fax Machine Orchestra and the Karaoke Circus live bands. He performs jingles regularly in the comedy podcast Answer Me This!. White co-wrote ''Psister Psycho'' – a musical about a killer robotic lesbian nun – with Danielle Ward for the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Martin White (hurler)
Martin White (31 July 1909 – 12 October 2011) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. White made his first appearance for the team during the 1931 championship and became a regular member of the team until his retirement following the conclusion of the 1938 championship. During that time he won three All-Ireland winner's medals and three Leinster winner's medals. At club level White enjoyed lengthy careers with Tullaroan in Kilkenny and with Blackrock in Cork. He won three county club championship winners' medals with the former. Until his death White was the oldest living senior All-Ireland medal winner. Admiral Martin White was an officer of the Royal Navy. He worked his way up the ranks during a 53-year career; retiring as Captain and made up to Admiral in retirement and settling in Jersey. He was particularly known for gathering and publishing nautical data and mappings of the Channel Islands, English Channel, French Coast, Bristol Channel and Irish Sea and even gained a mention in the French Maritime Atlas of the 1800s. Most maritime charts from around Jersey and the Channel Islands are believed to be derivations of his work. Life Martin White was born in 1779 (one document says 1781) on Hayling Island, Hampshire, England to his parents Martin and Elizabeth White. His father was a wine-merchant of Postsea, Portsmouth.
