Markham was a provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Ontario, Canada created in 1986. Tony Wong resigned in the fall of 2006 to successfully seek election to York Regional Council. His provincial seat was filled in a 2007 Ontario provincial by-election, by-election on February 8, 2007. However the riding was abolished at the 2007 Ontario general election, October 4, 2007 provincial election, and redistributed between the new provincial ridings of Markham—Unionville (federal electoral district), Markham—Unionville and Oak Ridges—Markham (provincial electoral district), Oak Ridges—Markham as its federal counterpart already has been. Tony Wong (Canadian Politician)
Tony Wong (born Wong Chi-wah; December 12, 1948 – June 17, 2009) was a Hong Kong Canadian politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2006 representing the Greater Toronto Area riding of Markham. He was a municipal councillor for the city of Markham from 1997 to 2004 and served as a York Region Councillor from 2006 to 2009. David Tsubouchi
(born August 20, 1951) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 2003, and was a cabinet minister in the governments of Mike Harris and Ernie Eves. He was the first Japanese Canadian elected to a provincial legislature. Background Tsubouchi was born in Toronto, and grew up in Scarborough in the Agincourt area. His parents were Japanese Canadians, originally from British Columbia, who were interned during World War II. After their release they moved to Toronto. He graduated from Agincourt Collegiate Institute in 1968 and attended York University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall in 1975. Frank Scarpitti (born 1960) is a Canadian politician who has served as the 7th and current mayor of Markham since 2006. Early life Scarpitti was born in Ontario in 1960. He is the son of Italian immigrants, Lucia and Antonio. He is married to Nancy Scarpitti, and has three children. He ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in the 1990 Ontario provincial election in Markham, but lost. Political career and mayoralty Scarpitti was appointed mayor from 1992 to 1994 following the death of Tony Roman but was defeated by Don Cousens in the 1994 municipal election. He subsequently worked as a broadcaster with CFMT in Toronto during his absence from politics from 1994 to 1997. She was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995 who represented the Toronto riding of Scarborough West. W. Donald Cousens (20 July 1938 – 23 February 2017) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1981 to 1994, and briefly served as a cabinet minister in the government of Frank Miller. York Centre (provincial Electoral District)
York Centre is a provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been the name of ridings in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario three different times. It was created initially in 1955 from the southern part of York North. It was dissolved in 1963 when it was split into three ridings called Yorkview, Downsview and Armourdale. In 1967, it was reconstituted north of Steeles in the township of Markham. This lasted until 1999 when it was dissolved into Markham—Unionville (provincial electoral district), Markham—Unionville. Oak Ridges—Markham was a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario between the 2007 provincial election and the 2018 provincial election. Its population in 2006 was 169,645, with 136,755 electors, the highest of any riding in Ontario. It was the fastest growing riding in the province, having experienced a 52.5% increase in population from 2001 to 2006. The district covered part of the suburbs north of Toronto.
