Mariupol
Mariupol is a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is situated on the northern coast (Pryazovia) of the Sea of Azov, at the mouth of the Kalmius, Kalmius River. Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was the tenth-largest city in the country and the second-largest city in Donetsk Oblast, with an estimated population of 425,681 people in January 2022; as of August 2023, Ukrainian authorities estimate the population of Mariupol at approximately 120,000. Mariupol has been occupied by Russian forces since May 2022. Historically, the city of Mariupol was a centre for trade and manufacturing, and played a key role in the development of higher education and many businesses and also served as a coastal resort on the Sea of Azov. Old Tower (Mariupol)
The Old Water Tower is an architectural monument of Mariupol in Ukraine. It is located in the central district at Architect Nilsen Street 36 (), at the intersection of Soborna Street and Enhel'sa St near Theatre Square. The tower was designed by architect Victor Nilsen and was completed in 1910. Built of red brick, it features various architectural styles. The tower is 33 metres tall with a spiral stair case of 157 steps. Located on the highest point in the area, it was not only the tallest structure at the time, but stood out as well. Donetsk Regional Drama Theatre
Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre (; ) or Mariupol Drama Theatre (; ) is a theatre in Mariupol in southern Ukraine. The modern theatre was constructed in 1960 in the approximate location of the former Church of Mary Magdalene (Mariupol), Church of Mary Magdalene. The theatre was known as Donetsk Regional Drama Theatre before it was given academic status in November 2007. The houses with a spire (, ) are two multi-storey buildings topped with spires that are among the main attractions of the city of Mariupol, Ukraine. They are located opposite of each other at the junction of Kuindzhi Street and Peace Avenue, Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, and serve as a visual gate, also called "Mariupol twins". Vadym Boychenko
Vadym Serhiyovych Boychenko (; born 5 June 1977) is a Ukrainian politician who serves as the de jure mayor of Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine since 2015. Boychenko served as mayor during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and Siege of Mariupol though not inside the city, during which the city has been "completely destroyed", according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Early life Boychenko was born in Mariupol on 5 June 1977. He is a graduate of both the Priazov State Technical University and the Donetsk National University. Pryazovskyi State Technical University
Pryazovskyi State Technical University (PSTU, ) is a higher education institution in Ukraine, accredited at the fourth level. It is one of the oldest universities in the Donetsk Region. Before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, PSTU was located in Mariupol and was one of the largest higher education institutions in the Pryazovia region. In March 2022, the university's Building 5 was struck by two heavy enemy aerial bombs, followed by additional hits that damaged other buildings, some completely destroyed. Kalmius
The Kalmius (, ) is a river flowing through Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. Its source is near the Ukrainian city of Yasynuvata, and its mouth is in Mariupol. The Kalmius is one of two rivers flowing through Mariupol. The other is the Kalchyk, which flows into the Kalmius.
