Marion Bay is a small township in the Australian state of South Australia at the southern tip of the Yorke Peninsula. Description It is surrounded by beaches and is the gateway to the Dhilba Guuranda–Innes National Park. The close proximity of the beach and cliffs have popularized Marion Bay as a fishing destination, with Brown Beach in the nearby Innes National Park being particularly famous among recreational fisherman as a picturesque fishing destination. Water supply In 2008, a desalination plant was commissioned to meet the water demands of the summer tourist season. A 60 kL/d sea water reverse osmosis plant now supplies the local caravan park, residents and businesses. The plant was commissioned in response to declining bore water quality and associated problems of corrosion. The plant was designed and constructed by Osmoflo. Marion Bay is a rural / residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Sorell in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about east of the town of Sorell. The 2016 census recorded a population of 72 for the state suburb of Marion Bay. Marion Bay is also a large bay on the south-east coast of Tasmania. Its south-western shore is contained by the Marion Bay Important Bird Area. History Marion Bay is a confirmed locality. European discovery Abel Tasman first anchored just north of a small island in the southern part of this large bay in 1642, and landed in the area he named Frederick Henricx Bay (made up of what is now called Blackman Bay, Marion Bay and North Bay). The name Frederick Henry Bay was mistakenly moved to its present location by Captain Tobias Furneaux. Marion Bay Important Bird Area
The Marion Bay Important Bird Area is on the south-western side of Marion Bay, south-eastern Tasmania, Australia. It includes two sandy, high-energy, oceanic beaches, Marion Bay Beach and North Bay Beach, encompasses the privately owned Long Spit Nature Reserve, and extends through the entrance of Blackman Bay to the intertidal mudflats within. The beaches and mudflats form a single system used by waders, or shorebirds; the storm-swept beaches of the outer bay contrast with and complement the sheltered mudflats and sand-bars of the inner bay.BirdLife International.
