Mario D'Agata
Mario D'Agata (29 May 1926 – 4 April 2009) was an Italian professional boxer, who was the first, and so far only, deaf world champion in boxing. He was a lineal, European, and Italian bantamweight champion. Early life D'Agata was born on 29 May 1926, in Arezzo, Italy. He had a tough childhood as a consequence of his disabilities, the victim of taunting from fellow school children. Feeling the need to prove himself equal, he resorted to street fighting as a way to demonstrate his equality. D'Agata was one of three children (out of seven) to be born deaf in his family. His parents moved him from Tuscany to Rome at an early age, hoping to find doctors who would cure him. One afternoon he noticed a poster of a boxer adorning the door to a boxing gym. José Becerra
Jesus "José" Becerra (15 April 1936 – 6 August 2016) was a Mexican professional boxer. He became world champion in the bantamweight division. Becerra was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the youngest of the five children. His parents were Maria Covarrubias and Jesus Becerra. At age 12, in the 5th grade, Becerra quit school to work in a carriage repair shop. Professional career Becerra received his first public notice in the Mexican sports world by scoring an upset over the vastly more experienced Manuel Armenteros. After some ups and downs, Becerra earned a top 10 ranking by knocking out former world champion Mario D'Agata. A short time later, Becerra won the Lineal bantamweight championship with a knockout over Alphonse Halimi. Freddie Gilroy
Frederick Gilroy (7 March 1936 – 28 June 2016) was a Northern Irish boxer. Gilroy won a bronze medal for Ireland at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne at Bantamweight. As a professional, he took the Commonwealth (British Empire) and European Bantamweight titles in 1959 and contended for the World Bantamweight Title in 1960. Early life and career Freddie Gilroy was born on 7 March 1936 in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, Northern Ireland. Jackie Brown (2 March 1935 — 12 January 2020) was a Scottish flyweight boxer who was a British and Commonwealth flyweight champion. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Amateur career Brown won the 1958 Amateur Boxing Association British flyweight title, when boxing out of the Leith Victoria ABC. Professional career Brown had his first professional fight on 16 October 1958, in Paisley, defeating Mark Quinn in the third round on a technical knockout. He won his first fifteen fights before losing two in succession, to Derek Lloyd and Freddie Gilroy.
