Mapu Taia
Mapu Tangatatutai Taia (28 April 1939 - October 2015) was a Cook Islands politician. He served as Speaker of the Cook Islands Parliament from 2006 to 2010. He was a member of the Democratic Party (Cook Islands), Cook Islands Democratic Party and held the traditional title of Kakemaunga Mataiapo. Taia was born in Mauke in the Cook Islands and educated at Mauke Primary School, Avarua School, Nikao Maori School and Tereora College. He completed a teaching diploma at Nikao Teachers Training College in 1958, and later studied at the University of the South Pacific. He worked as a primary school teacher, then as a principal of Mitiaro School (1963–1971) and Mauke College (1972–1996). While a school principal he also became an oral historian. He retired after 40 years of teaching in 1996, and became a Justice of the Peace. Speaker Of The Cook Islands Parliament
The Speaker of the Cook Islands Parliament is the presiding officer of the Parliament of the Cook Islands, Cook Islands Parliament. Mitiaro School
Mitiaro School or Apii Tematangarengare is a co-educational school on the island of Mitiaro in the Cook Islands. It is the only school on the island and has a roll of 36 students. The school has three teachers and offers classes from Grade 1 (year 1) to Form 5 (year 11). Cook Islanders are residents of the Cook Islands, which is composed of 15 islands and atolls in Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. Cook Islands Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of the Cook Islands, although the Cook Islands is currently home to approximately 15–17% of the Cook Islands Maori population, with New Zealand and Australia each having larger populations. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. 2010 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 17 November 2010 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Cook Islands Parliament. The elections were won by the Cook Islands Party, which won 16 of the 24 seats. Voter turnout was 78%. A binding referendum on whether the number of MPs should be reduced from 24 was held at the same time as the election. Parliament will sit for the first time following the election in February 2011. Background The Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Jim Marurai, which had governed since 2004, effectively collapsed in December 2009 after Finance Minister Terepai Maoate was sacked for his mishandling of a bid to buy the Toa fuel tank farm. This resulted in a mass-resignation of Democratic Party cabinet members, the expulsion of Marurai and his supporters, and the withdrawal of support for the government.
