Mann Family
The Mann family ( , ; ) is a German dynasty of novelists and an old Hanseaten (class), Hanseatic family of Patrician (post-Roman Europe), patricians from Free City of Lübeck, Lübeck. It is known for being the family of the Nobel Prize for Literature laureate Thomas Mann. History Originally the Manns were merchants, allegedly already in the 16th century in Nuremberg, documented since 1611 in Parchim, since 1713 in Rostock and since 1775 in Lübeck. There they became wealthy grain merchants, a Hanseaten (class), Hanseatic family and as such members of the small ruling class of the Free City of Lübeck, a city republic and state of the German Empire. Ludvík Aškenazy
Ludvík Aškenazy (24 February 1921 – 18 March 1986) was a Czech-Jewish writer and journalist. Biography Aškenazy was born on 24 February 1921 in Český Těšín. After the Occupation of Czechoslovakia (1938–1945), German occupation of Czechoslovakia his family emigrated to Poland and lived in Stanisławów (present-day Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine), which was later annexed by USSR. Later he moved to Lviv to study the Slavonic philology. During World War II, he was a soldier in the Czech units of the Soviet Army in the Soviet Union. He was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Between 1945 and 1950, he worked in the state Czech Radio, Czechoslovak Radio and after that, he became a government-sanctioned "writer." The Prussian Academy of Arts () was a state arts academy first established in 1694 by prince-elector Frederick III of Electorate of Brandenburg, Brandenburg in Berlin, in personal union Duke Frederick I of Prussia, and later king in Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia. Luiz Heinrich Mann (; March 27, 1871 – March 11, 1950), best known as simply Heinrich Mann, was a German writer known for his sociopolitical novels. From 1930 until 1933, he was president of the fine poetry division of the Prussian Academy of Arts. Júlia da Silva Bruhns (14 August 1851, Paraty – 11 March 1923, Weßling) was the Brazilian mother of Thomas and Heinrich Mann and one of the matriarchs of the Mann family. Biography Da Silva Bruhns was born in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro state on Boa Vista sugar plantation. Raised Roman Catholic, she was the daughter of a Lübecker farmer Johann Ludwig Herman Bruhns and his wife Maria Luísa da Silva, herself the daughter of a Portuguese immigrant and landowner and his wife, who was of Criollo descent. Johann had emigrated from Lübeck to Brazil at age 16 and changed his name to João Luis Germano Bruhns. He owned several sugar cane plantations between Santos and Rio de Janeiro.
