Mandrake
A mandrake is the root of a plant, historically derived either from plants of the genus '' Mandragora'' (in the family Solanaceae) found in the Mediterranean region, or from other species, such as '' Bryonia alba'' (the English mandrake, in the family Cucurbitaceae) or the American mandrake ('' Podophyllum peltatum'' in the family Berberidaceae) which have similar properties. The plants from which the root is obtained are also called "mandrakes". Mediterranean mandrakes are perennial herbaceous plants with ovate leaves arranged in a rosette, a thick upright root, often branched, and bell-shaped flowers that produce yellow or orange berries. The Mandrake (Surrealist Group)
''The Mandrake'' (Italian: ''La Mandragola'' ) is a satirical play by Italian Renaissance philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli. Although the five-act comedy was published in 1524 and first performed in the carnival season of 1526, Machiavelli likely wrote ''The Mandrake'' in 1518 as a distraction from his bitterness at having been excluded from the diplomatic and political life of Florence following the 1512 reversion to Medici rule. Some scholars read the play as an overt critique of the House of Medici; and some scholars assert that the play is a mirror to his political treatises. However, Machiavelli set the action in 1504 during the period of the Florentine Republic in order to express his frustrations without fear of censure from patrons already ill-disposed towards him and his writing. Synopsis ''The Mandrake'' takes place over a 24-hour period. The protagonist, Callimaco, desires to sleep with Lucrezia, the young and beautiful wife of an elderly fool, Nicia. Nicia above all e ...

The Mandrake (band)
The Mandrake is a death metal band who were signed to Crash Music but now describe themselves as looking for a new label, and they are releasing their next EP independently. They have released one demo and one studio album. The Mandrake is, according to their record label, an example of an American band with a lot of Scandinavian influences from the likes of Age of Ruin, Opeth and At the Gates; Scandinavia having dominated the black and death metal scene throughout the 1990s. The band achieved early success, garnering favorable reviews even in the demo stage. Slight touches of black metal are often present in some of their work. While at the demo stage, they opened for international bands including Six Feet Under, Fear Factory and Behemoth. History The Mandrake was founded in early 2001 by their guitarist, Ron Carillo, and they released their first demo, '' Dying Sentiment'', later that year. Their debut studio album, '' The Burning Horizon at the End of Dawn'', was released ...

Mandrake (Japanese Band)
was a Japanese progressive rock band formed in Tokyo in 1973. One of the few Japanese groups active during the genre's heyday, they distinguished themselves by developing a style of their own, harder than the jazz fusion hybrid most other Japanese groups played. They were unable to release any albums during their lifetime; by the point they were approached by a label, most of their members felt the genre was no longer capable of supporting the themes they wished to explore. New wave music had started to spread in the west by that point, a genre they saw as more fitting to their aims. After a farewell concert on New Year's Eve 1978, most of the band opted to reform as P-Model. Guitarist Susumu Hirasawa is the only member that remains professionally active as a musician. He has kept traits of progressive rock part of his writing style but has no desire to fully reembrace the genre. Bootleg and demo recordings of some Mandrake songs were released over 2 albums in 1997, to date the ...

Shamal (album)
''Shamal'' is the sixth studio album released under the name Gong and was released by Virgin Records on 13 February 1976 The album, produced by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, was recorded in December 1975 by a unique line-up referred to later as "Shamal-Gong". It is usually regarded as a transitional album between Daevid Allen's incarnation of the band and the Pierre Moerlen-led fusion line-up of the late 1970s. Reception Reviewing the album for the website Sputnikmusic, Robert Davis said: The greatest thing about ''Shamal'' is that it's so versatile. There are only six tracks here, but each one seems to explore a different tone and aspect of musical experimentation. The softer tracks such as opener "Wingful of Eyes" and beautiful, elegant flute-led "Bambooji" are complementary to the album's quirkier tracks, such as the almost Frank Zappa-inspired "Cat in Clark's Shoes" and eccentric closing title track. Yet what really glues all these songs together is the absence of self-indu ...
