Mandolin Society Of Peterborough
The Mandolin Society of Peterborough (MSOP) was a non-profit community mandolin orchestra based in the City of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The MSOP was one of three such groups in Ontario (as of 2013), and the only one composed completely of mandolinists. In 2019, the society disbanded. History The Society was founded in 2003 by Curtis Driedger. Since the year 2000, several Peterborough musical groups have come together in December each year put on a concert called In From the Cold. Mandolin Orchestra
A mandolin orchestra is an orchestra consisting primarily of instruments from the mandolin family of instruments, such as the mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass or mandolone. Some mandolin orchestras use guitars and double-basses instead of, or as well as, the lower mandolin-family instruments. Orchestra composition A mandolin orchestra is an ensemble of plucked string instruments similar in structure to the string sections of a symphony orchestra. There are first and second mandolin sections (analogous to first and second violins); a mandola section (analogous to the viola section); mandocelli (analogous to the violoncelli), classical guitars, and a bass section originally of mando-basses but nowadays more likely to be acoustic bass guitar or double bass. Youth Emergency Shelter
The YES Shelter For Youth and Families, formerly known as the Youth Emergency Shelter (YES), is located in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. It is a homeless shelter that provides three meals a day to clients and offers food boxes to those in need. After over 40 years of planning, YES opened its doors on December 20, 2002. The official opening of the shelter occurred in February 2003 and was attended by both local and federal politicians including the Honourable Jane Stewart. While YES is a shelter for homeless youth and families, it is also an umbrella organization for other programs concerning this group of at-risk youth. Services Emergency shelter for youth YES is open and staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. ''Rigoletto'' is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play ''Le roi s'amuse'' by Victor Hugo. Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (; 9 or 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian composer best known for his operas. He was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, receiving a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini, whose works significantly influenced him. Peterborough Folk Festival
The Peterborough Folk Festival is a three-day music, arts, and community festival in Peterborough, Ontario. The festival is a non-profit organization which receives funding from the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation, The Department of Canadian Heritage -Arts Presentation Canada Program, and The City of Peterborough as well as private and corporate donations. It is one of the last free folk festivals in Ontario. The mandate of the PFF is to present high-quality music from a broad range of genres and cultures, as well as to foster community education and interaction. In 2001, the PFF introduced the Emerging Artist Award.
