Man-of-war
In Royal Navy jargon, a man-of-war (also man-o'-war, or simply man) was a powerful warship or frigate of the 16th to the 19th century, that was frequently used in Europe. Although the term never acquired a specific meaning, it was usually reserved for a sailing ship armed with cannon. The rating system of the Royal Navy classified men-of-war into six "rates", a "first-rate" having the greatest armament, and a "sixth-rate" the least. Portuguese Man O' War
The Portuguese war (''Physalia physalis''), also known as the man-of-war or bluebottle, is a marine hydrozoan found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is the only species in the genus ''Physalia'', which in turn is the only genus in the family Physaliidae. The name ''man o’ war'' comes from the man-of-war, a sailing warship, and the animal's resemblance to the Portuguese version (the caravel) at full sail. The man o' war are part of the neuston, organisms that live on the surface of the water. A gas-filled bladder provides buoyancy that lets the animal stay afloat on the surface of the water while tentacles which can be up to165 ft (9 to 50 m) long hang below the surface, containing venomous Cnidocyte, cnidocytes that help capture prey. "Man of War" is a song by the English rock band Radiohead, released on 22 June 2017 on the compilation album '' OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017.'' Radiohead first performed "Man of War" while on tour for their second album, '' The Bends'' (1995). The singer, Thom Yorke, described it as a homage to James Bond themes. Radiohead recorded a version during the early sessions for their third album, '' OK Computer'' (1997), but abandoned it as they felt it was too similar to ''The Bends''. They recorded a rearranged version for the 1998 film '' The Avengers'', but were unsatisfied with the results and it went unreleased. Years later, Radiohead submitted "Man of War" for the 2015 James Bond film ''Spectre'', but it was rejected as it had not been written for the film. ''Man of War'' is a 1997 real-time strategic naval combat video game developed by Strategy First and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment for MS-DOS compatible operating systems and Microsoft Windows. A sequel, ''Man of War II: Chains of Command'', was released in 1999. Plot and gameplay Players complete naval battles through a series of historical scenarios. The games included a character creator, and a scenario editor. Development The game was developed by the small studio Strategy First (established in 1991), and would become one of its flagship series. The Lizard complex, Cornwall is generally accepted to represent a preserved example of an exposed ophiolite complex in the United Kingdom. The rocks found in The Lizard area are analogous to those found in such famous areas as the Troodos Mountains, Cyprus and the Semail Ophiolite, Oman. Man Of War, Fingal
Man of War (also known as Man O' War) is a small populated place in Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland. It is centred on the townlands of Courtlough, Malheney and Palmerstown which lie in the civil parish of Balrothery. It is located about 24 kilometres north of Dublin city, between the towns of Skerries, Lusk and Balbriggan. Man of War area is noted for its public house and restaurant which has a preserved tree inside the establishment and also shares the name Man of War. The building has existed for centuries, with deeds mentioning it at least as far back to 1595. In 1732 an Act of Parliament established the tolled Coach Road called the Dublin to Dunleer Turnpike (1732—1855) and a turnpike (toll booth) was situated at the Man O'War Pub which has since been removed. Manowar is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York. Formed in 1980, the group is known for lyrics based on fantasy (particularly sword and sorcery) and mythology (particularly Norse mythology and Greco-Roman mythology), as well as numerous songs celebrating the genre and its core audience. The band is also known for a loud and emphatic sound. In an interview for MTV in February 2007, bassist Joey DeMaio lamented that "these days, there's a real lack of big, epic metal that is drenched with crushing guitars and choirs and orchestras... so it's nice to be one of the few bands that's actually doing that".
