Mammals Of Sri Lanka (book)
Mammals of Sri Lanka by written by Asoka Yapa and illustrated by Gamini Ratnavira is a zoology book about the mammalian species of Sri Lanka. This is the first complete zoological book about mammals in Sri Lanka in 80 years. The first Sri Lankan book on mammals dated back to 1935, when W.W.A Phillips wrote ''Manuals of The Mammals of Ceylon''. After that, many journals and other minor works on the topic were published, but no fully-detailed and fully-photographed volumes. Asoka Yapa is a Canadian resident who trained as a zoologist, was a science editor with Canadian Forest Service, and was also a key member of many departments in Canada related to wildlife. As stated in the book's introduction, he was influenced by the work of his friend Professor Sarath Kotagama, the leading ornithologist in Sri Lanka. Field Ornithology Group Of Sri Lanka
Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, commonly abbreviated FOGSL, is the Sri Lankan affiliate of BirdLife International. It was founded in 1976 to promote the conservation of birds and preservation of the environment. FOGSL headquarters are situated in the Department of Zoology, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Its president is Professor Nihal Dayawansa. Activities and events Identifying and proposing Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka is one of the main activities of the group. This project has now entered its second phase, conducting studies to evaluate the biodiversity of proposed 70 IBAs. Conducting research on some selected endemic birds, the Sri Lanka blue magpie and spot-winged thrush, is another activity of the group. The Canadian Forest Service (CFS; ) is a sector of the Canadian government department of Natural Resources Canada. Vidya Jyothi Sarath Wimalabandara Kotagama () is a Sri Lankan ornithologist and environmentalist. He is a Professor Emeritus and former head of the Department of Zoology, University of Colombo. Education Kotagama obtained a BSc from the University of Colombo, and gained a PhD on the feeding and behavioral ecology of rose-ringed parakeet at the University of Aberdeen. Rohan Pethiyagoda
Rohan David Pethiyagoda is a Sri Lankan biodiversity scientist, amphibian and freshwater-fish taxonomist, author, conservationist and public-policy advocate. Early life and career Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 19 November 1955 Pethiyagoda had his secondary education at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He was awarded a BSc (Eng.) Hons. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from King's College, University of London in 1977, and a M.Phil. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sussex in 1980.
