This is a list of mammals of Europe. It includes all mammals currently found in Europe (from northeast Atlantic to Ural Mountains and northern slope of Caucasus Mountains), whether resident or as regular migrants. Moreover, species occurring in Cyprus, Canary Islands (Spain) and Azores (Portugal) are listed here. If geographical range of given European mammal additionally overlaps Turkey, it is noted in some of cases. This checklist does not include species found only in captivity. Southern White-breasted Hedgehog
The southern white-breasted hedgehog (''Erinaceus concolor''), sometimes referred to as white-bellied hedgehog or white-chested hedgehog, is a hedgehog native to Eastern Europe and Southwestern Asia. These hedgehogs are becomingly increasingly popular as pets in the United States and Iran. Description It is very similar in appearance to the European hedgehog (''E. europaeus''), but it has a white spot on its chest that easily distinguishes them. They weigh between 680 and 900 grams. Their body weight drops no lower than 600 grams during hibernation. Origins The white breasted hedgehog diverged from a split lineage due to geographical features. The Caucasus Mountains played a significant role in dividing the white breasted hedgehog to southern and northern locations. Levant Mole
The Levant mole (''Talpa levantis'') is a species of mammal in the family Talpidae. Taxonomy and evolution The Levant mole was first described as a subspecies of '' Talpa caeca'' by Oldfield Thomas in 1906, and recognized as a full species in 1973 by Spitzenberg. Moles in the genus ''Talpa'' are morphologically very similar to each other, which has made separating the species difficult before the wide availability of genetic analysis. The Talysch mole (''T. talyschensis'') was formerly considered a synonym of ''T. levantis'', but more recent studies have found it to be distinct. European Mole
The European mole (''Talpa europaea'') is a mammal of the order Eulipotyphla. It is also known as the common mole and the northern mole. This mole lives in a tunnel system, which it constantly extends. It uses these tunnels to hunt its prey. Under normal conditions, the displaced earth is pushed to the surface, resulting in the characteristic molehills. It is an omnivore that feeds mainly on earthworms, but also on insects, centipedes and mammals such as rodents and other moles. Its saliva contains toxins which paralyze earthworms in particular. Taxonomy The Aquitanian mole (''T. aquitania'') was formerly considered conspecific, but was described as a distinct species in 2017. The Caucasus () or Caucasia (), is a region spanning Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, comprising parts of Southern Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Aquitanian Mole
The Aquitanian mole (''Talpa aquitania'') is a species of small burrowing mammal of the family Talpidae. It is found from the southwest of France to the north of Spain. Closely related to the European mole (''T. europaea''), this species was described in 2017, and it is difficult to distinguish it from it. Taxonomy This species was described in 2017 by zoologists Violaine Nicolas, Jessica Martínez-Vargas and Jean-Pierre Hugot. Its specific epithet, ''aquitania'', means "Aquitaine", a former French region which is part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, where it is most abundant.
