Malin Bridge Tram Stop
The South Yorkshire Supertram, sometimes referred to as the Sheffield Supertram, is a tram and tram-train network covering Sheffield and Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The network is owned and operated by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). Interest in building a modern tram system for Sheffield had mounted during the 1980s. After detailed planning by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), the Supertram proposal was approved by an act of Parliament in 1991. Construction of the network, incorporating several existing heavy rail sections as well as new track, was carried out in sections, allowing revenue services to start during 1994. Siemens-Duewag Supertram
The Siemens-Duewag Supertram is a fleet of 25 trams built by Siemens Mobility, Siemens-Duewag of Düsseldorf, Germany in 1992 for use on the South Yorkshire Supertram light rail network in England. They were the only trams in use on the network until the entry into service of British Rail Class 399 tram-trains in 2017. As of June 2025, all of the fleet is operational. History After undergoing trials on Düsseldorf's Rheinbahn system, the trams were delivered to Sheffield via the Rotterdam-Immingham cargo ship route. The trams are bidirectional and consist of three articulated carriages with a low-floor area of 40%. All four entrances are at low level matching the height of the platforms to provide level access. Meadowhall Interchange is a transport interchange located in north-east Sheffield, consisting of a combined railway station, heavy rail station, tram stop and bus station, bus and coach station. The second-busiest heavy rail station in the city in terms of passenger numbers, Meadowhall Interchange provides connections between National Rail services, the Sheffield Supertram light rail network, intercity coach services and the city bus network. Sheffield Tramway
Sheffield Tramway was an extensive tramway network serving the England, English city of Sheffield and its suburbs. The first tramway line, horse-drawn, opened in 1873 between Lady's Bridge and Attercliffe, subsequently extended to Brightside, South Yorkshire, Brightside and Tinsley, South Yorkshire, Tinsley. Routes were built to Heeley, where a tram depot was built, Nether Edge and Hillsborough, South Yorkshire, Hillsborough. In 1899, the first electric tram ran between Nether Edge and Tinsley, and by 1902 all the routes were electrified. As of 1910 the network covered 39 miles (62.7 km) and as of 1951 48 miles (77.2 km).
